    Hi,

I've seen a few threads on asbestos removal here before (can't find without search function) but I don't remember these actually containing any specific recommendations for a company to do some asbestos removal in Dublin.

I need to have 6 metres x 3 metres of asbestos removed from the roof of my garage (which will be demolished).

Can anyone recommend someone in Dublin to do this and also what ballpark should it cost?

I will be demolishing the garage after the asbestos roof has been removed - is it safe for me to do this?

    Hi Frank,

There is a thread not more than a couple of weeks old on the subject, I recall someone was quoted €1,500.00 for removal and disposal of the asbestos.

    Hi

My mother got quoted €300 for the removal of three six foot gutters and a six foot downpipe made from asbestos... while this is a legitimate company licenced by the local authority and the waste is being exported to Germany for safe disposal it seems a little expensive. They would be picking it up from the house.

Are there any cheaper options? I can take down the two asbestos gutters still up (one fell onto the ground in a storm) while using a respirator etc etc... total length of guttering about 24 feet including a downpipe and then drop it to a company myself. Someone mentioned that a company in Ballymount may take it if correctly wrapped etc... I have a huge roll of builders plastic and I could double wrap it properly, anyone have any info on such companies?

Is a good quality disposable respirator with a carbon filter, filters particles down to .1 micron or so, suitable for this type of work? (costs about €30). The ratings on dust masks, P2 and P3 aren't good enough for asbestos I presume? Do I need a mask explicitly stating 'suitable for asbestos'? (I use the masks for spraying AC lacquers)

There is one other 8 foot gutter on a different wall that is also asbestos, should this be taken down now even if it's ok?
I think it probably should as the disposal charge shouldn't be much more....

And finally there is one 8 foot asbestos pipe running from the boiler to the roof, again would people recommend removing this now even though it's ok? This would be a bigger job and I mightn't be able to do it....

My mother is pretty freaked by the whole asbestos thing....
    Cheers
    Joe

    Hi,

I think the company name is Greenstar but easy to check on the www there is a licenced disposal site in Kildare that has a base in Ballymount so it could be the same company.

The price quoted is very reasonable considering it cost £450.00 for three bags and that was pre Euro currency.

There is very little danger from asbestos gutters or sheets because the asbestos is content is small and bound by the cement, hence the name Asbestos Cement.

The real danger is from asbestos insulation used for lagging pipes because the asbestos is a different type and is not encapsulated.

Use the best mask you can get and a Tyvek throw away suit (should be included with the asbestos) the disposal company will want the waste double wrapped in heavy guage polythene and clearly marked "asbestos waste".

I don't know if your Mother will be happy leaving the pipe but if it is still smooth, not flaking then you could paint it.

Hi, I would do what Rooferpete advises. Safe cloothing, wearing a mask and cloves and ask the company who is comming to collect it how they want to have it wrapped.
I'm from The Netherlands and there you are allowed to remove asbestos yourself if it doesn't exceed 25M2 (might have changed since we left).
You'd get a leaflet explaining what to do, and stickers with "Danger asbestos" from the County and then you can bring it to your local landfill and they will take care of disposal.

I have been quoted between 3 and 6 grand to remove a ceiling that has asbestos in it from a house?
Does that seem excessive to anyone else?

    Hi,
I have a flue from an old boiler that needs to be taken down at least with asbestos a lot of the heating contractors won't take it down and I need to get the boiler replaced asap. One company are willing to at least take it down, but they are the most expensive and I just wondered how much it costs to get an asbestos flue removed and safely disposed of. I was told it would cost about 200 euro by one heating contractor, but I hav n't heard back yet from any of the companies I contacted for quotes. Is this about right?
