    Please help me settle an argument...

    When would you expect a company, in the event of them offering you a job, to request referee's for a reference check?

    Would the the scenario be -

    1. You go for an interview and everything goes well.
    Couple of days later you hear back from the company and they would like referee's...
    In this case you don't hand in your resignation until they have formally offered the postion...

    or

    2. You are formally offered the job, you accept, you hand in your resignation, sign a contract and arrange a start date and then the company asks for references....

    Just say 1 or 2....

    Neither.
    Some wont offer a job until they get references.
    I've been to a few interviews where they've asked to use references... way before a job offer was on the cards.

    If I must... it'd be 1.
    Anyway, 2 doesnt make sense.
    Why ask for references after an offer is made??

    From my experience companies do not normally check references.

    But to answer your question, 1.

    But 2 is probably better, because you already have the job!

    Definetly go for option 1. My girlfriend is in that situation right now... don't quit current job until you have the contract in your hand for the new one.

    A lot of places do not check if your interview and skills seem enough... but some places do check.

    my experience, they always check refs prior to making formal offer.

    Usual process is
    Stage 1-1st interview
    Stage 2-2nd interview
    Stage 3- refererence check and medical
    Stage 4- job offer

    Stage 1 although your current employer could be peeved by this.

    Slightly different for me in my last job:

    Stage 1-1st interview
    Stage 2-2nd interview
    Stage 3- job offer, subject to:
    Stage 4- refererence check and medical

    I can't remember at which stage I got the contract though. I was out of work at the time, so didn't have to worry about when to hand in my notice.
