Lapsed Diabetic

    Hi All,

Apols if this is in the wrong place, I couldn't see a health forum.

I was diagnosed with diabetes ten years ago last week, and thank God, I've had no complications so far. When I was first diagnosed, I went to the doc's every six months like clockwork, but about 4 years ago, I went to Australia and havn't been to the docs since I came back. I don't check my bloods much, but whenever I do, they've been ok. I take the same dose of insulin every morning and evening, and it seems to be ok.
I know it's stupid but I'm scared the doc will give out to me when I go back cause I've not been in ages. He's really nice, but I just don't know what to say. I know how silly this sounds, and I know the advice I'd give to someone else if they posted this but......

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

    cheers,
    Caimin

No. You know what you must do now go and do it! What do you think your doctor is going to do? Make you say a 100 holy marys? Don't be worried the Doc will not mind just explain your situation and it won't be a problem; you don't need someone to hold your hand now do you :)!

Yeah, you're right, I know :) It just gets bigger and bigger in my head the longer I leave it.

Hi Caimin, i've had diabetes for about 4 years. I don't think i've had it long enough to go through a phase where i totally let it lapse, plus i'm a bit of a hypochondiac so i'd go nuts if i didn't know what was going on with my body. But like most diabetics i go through phases where i just get so sick of it that i don't care and i don't test like a should, eat like i should etc etc. I think thats just part of it, its difficult to be 'good' all of the time.

If your doctor is as nice as you say then i doubt he'll give out, he'll be more concerned about getting you back and making sure you're on the right track again. I'm sure you know as well as i do that testing your bloods doesn't really give an accurate idea of how you're doing, you need to be getting regular a1cs which is probably all the doc will be concerned about.

As for what to say, tell him the truth. I'm sure you're not the first and won't be the last diabetic to do the same thing, he's probably seen it plenty of times before!!
