    Hey,

Without recieving the wrath of all that is Rock/Grunge or Metal in Dublin. Are there any musicians out there that are finding it really hard to find an alternative project to R&R (Not that there is anything wrong with it can I add).

I'm looking (still) for like minded heads that are wanting something more soul/funk based in their music. Primarily drums, bass (double?) and guitar. Although at this stage if there is a keys player out there, perferebly with that old hammond sound then great.

Without listing the usual suspects (The JB's/Early K&TG etc)influences are up to you all. As wide a selection the better. If you can bring the groove to the table, does it matter who gave it to you?

I have been playing percussion for nearly 10 years, and guitar for around the same time. However, percussion is my first love (Congos/Bongos/ Timbales).

To add to above, if there is anyone from an electronics background interested in putting their input into a collective then why not.

email me if you are interested, or in fact know anyone who may be interested.

    P.

Put some funk back into the Dublin music scene.

What about creating a blog for this. I agree, it seems that if its not the sound of loud clanging guitars it's not talked about anymore. I have to say, apart from the odd night in the Gaiety theatre I can't remember (apart from Repub of Loose) the last time I heard any band playing any sort of sound with soul. Whats going on???

Yeah something needs to be done. I know of people that are into funk and soul but everyone who's into it thinks that there is no one else out there that likes funk anymore, if you get what I mean.
We need to all get together and help get the funk heard and talked about!

I'm down in Cork mate and it's the same ol story..people aren't interested in puttin in the work to a funk band. Everyone wants to be the next Slash so the unity that's needed to create a kickin rhythm section ain't there. People feel that unless they're playing for EVERY bar of the music that they've nothing to do, funk bands are all about a lick here and there and nice synchopation but indie and rock bands just wanna deafen and outplay each other. I am of course speaking of the majority, i'm sure some of you have a feel for other musicians and know how to work as a band and not just as 4 soloists!

My suggestion: Go to New York, masses of different cultures, sounds, players, but most importantly DEDICATED musicians.

I'm based in Cork too man and I don't think there's anything here but metal and indie. I completely agree with your views on how a band should write. So many musicians are playing these days with huge egos on their shoulders. Drummers and guitarists are the worst. The drummer I play with is really good but doesn't play overly fancy or throw 60 fills into a song. Other drummers would think that's bad playing on his part! He plays what's right for the song and works hard with me on making the rhythm section as tight and funky as possible.

    Anymore thoughts on all this???

Well at least i know i'm not alone TD, so is the rest of your band lettin you down or is it just the 2 of you? Drummers can defo be very looOOUDD! (Ssshh!!) I keep repeating the phrase "less CAN be more"..I think the whole thing stems from the facilities in this country. Its hard enough getting three other guys to fork out 20quid a week for some hole of a rehearsal space without a trying to get a commited brass section too! The government should be encouraging the development of music, set up community halls where people can book in for free with the PA provided etc, I know tonnes of GAA, sports halls that are left idle 5 nights a week...we're also still a developing country with a small population, small venues and non existent specialised music schools that practise live performance as well as theory. All these factors (along with the Indie explosion that glamourises guitars and creates fashion statements-strokes, killers, franz, etc) has left a serious void not only in the market but in the local jam scene. I happen to be EXTREMELY fortunate as I'm studying music in UCC where there's an abundance of players from all music families, several rehearsal rooms with provided PA and gigs every thursday night again with provided PA. But trying to get and KEEP a soul-funk band together by putting fliers in the music shops and posting ads on the musician.ie/buyandsell sites can be a very futile process. Personally I've gotten a decent bunch from the college together and hopefully we can keep it going, but to be honest I still see myself in London/New York after my degree as I'm quite keen on production as well as performance and to be honest I don't see practical application for either here.

Less certainly can be more in most cases, and simple can sometimes be best.

It's just the two of us trying to get a funk band going. we each have seperate experience in other bands but would like to give this a go. We just wanna get a band together for now, jam out a few songs, maybe record a demo. We have some good contacts so radio airplay and some reviews would be possible. We really just wanna see if we can find some sorta spark. We already gel brilliantly together and we wanna try replicate that on guitar and vocals.

What's the UCC musical society like?? Coz I was in UCC last year but never checked it out.

Good scene but could but a million times better. So many students are just into either goin on the piss, getting outta (really interesting) classes or not using the excellent facilities. They seriously have no idea how lucky they are. Comes back to laziness in our society I think. That's just what i think, i'd jam seven nights a week man, musical fusion beats a hangover every time.
Don't give up any way chief, there ARE people out there, but finding motivated ones, with similiar interests is the challenge.
