Discounted rail tickets

A very interesting thread over on the Platform 11 messageboards (registration required) has highlighted an apparently well kept secret source of discounted rail tickets.

Apparently some Credit Unions sell rail tickets for journeys from their nearest station at significant discounts.

One example given is Thurles-Dublin. €15 single and €30 return where regular fares are €30 single and €37.50 return.

It appears to be a long-runing thing not a special offer and there is so far no indication of how widespread it is across credit unions. Certainly worth a phonecall to the local CU for anyone planning a rail journey.

I assume CU membership would be necessary.
