Just wondered if anyone has used any websites to buy eye glasses, Ive heard you can get some of the nice designer frames really cheap and then get someone like specsavers to put the lenses in.

If you've used any similar websites, Id be interested in hearing what they're like!

Well m8 i bought mine off of ebay, and then just got the local optican to put the lenses in.

Got french connection frames not to sure what they cost something like £6.99 then another £4 for the postage. Then i cost me €50 to get the lenses put into them so in total that was a great savings considering that a new pair of glasses would cost you at least €120 or more!!!!!!!

In fairness, I doubt you'll get any designer glasses "cheap" on a website. The missus works in an opticians and some people have come in with what they think is designer gear that they have sourced "elsewhere" and 10 times out of 10 it turns out to be cheap rubbish.

You will get what you pay for, nothing more.

Why can't you get the lenses and frames done abroad? Just get your lense prescription at the opticians. They have to be cheaper in some of the other countries within the EU. I am guessing that some countries aren't aware that their prices would be cheap to us.

I cant get them done abroad because Im not planning on going anywhere til maybe Easter..

Ive heard of good websites that sell the frames, I just cant remember the web addresses.

www.getlenses.com do cheap glasses as far as I remember.

The only thing is, glasses are usually adjusted to fit your head, which is something an online store can't really do...

You can get new glasses abroad, and you don't need your prescription. Opticians can measure your existing lenses and fit an identical pair to new frames. A mate got a new pair of Armani glasses, complete with lenses, for about €100 in Italy while we were on holidays this year.

However, I agree with Pet, an awful lot of buying new glasses is the fit. For that reason I'd never buy frames online.

Personally I find that most opticians these days can't fit either.

Anyone like to recommend an optician they like?

Just by chance, I came across this site a few mins ago. I might be tempted to try a pair.

I got new glasses last week... €429.. sheesh...

Is Ted Baker a good label? I wish it was Tom Baker... that would be cool...

My sister worked in an opticians and she says they rarely do any adjustment. A lot of people get their galsses adjusted later for a minimum charge but mostly for free. SO I could see you buying glasses on line and then getting them adjusted and saving money.

just looked into that crowd getlenses.com very impressive.

they'll save me 50% on my contact lenses....they are a "lense replacement" company...so by law they have to provide you with the same prescription and make of lenses prescribed by your optician....sounds win/win to me...waiting for the catch though..

I've had very good experiences with GrandOptical and have bought several pairs from them in Madrid (Sol) and Barcelona (Placa Catalunya). It's a very professional service compared to what we get here, they are careful to make sure the lenses are centered on your pupil for example. (Or at least they have a lot of impressive looking machines and people in white coats operating them :-)

They're a French chain with shops throughout Europe. They also own Vision Express, which means your glasses are warranty covered by them once you get home, very handy.

Would probably want to try glasses on before buying, difficult to know before you see them on your face (although with my eyesight even looking in a mirror that is very difficult!)

It's a pain in the ass isn't it?

When I was looking for frames recently I used the camera on my phone to take a snap of me each time I tried a different set of frames on. There's a top tip for you!

Recently received a pair from glassesdirect.co.uk and am very impressed with the service, got a cheap pair (£17.50 incl delivery) to try them out and I will be using them again.
