Chevrolet Corvair;

    Has anyone seen one of these, a Chevrolet Corvair. Its got a flat six engine in the rear. I bought this one a few years ago in Galway and restored it. It is a lovely car to drive even though it had a bad reputation. Ralf Nader, I think his name was, wrote a book about it called "Unsafe at any speed". It was brought out by Chevrolet in opposition to the Ford Mustang. Has anyone else got one?

    Sorry picture quality isn't great.

    Hi Junkyard - I'd love a closer look/drive. Where are you located?

    I'm located in Cobh, Co. Cork ds. I sold the car about two years ago but its not too far from my garage. Let me know when you want to see it and I'll make arrangements any time.

    Thanks JY - I'll give you a nod next time I'm down that way.

    Probably one of the most "interesting" american cars of the sixties.

    I remember this car from around Galway - the engine noise is very distinctive. I also remember it being for sale and wondering what sort of masochist would buy it - congratulations! The body shape is very 'European' for an American car and if I remember rightly it needed a fair bit of attention. I've only ever seen others in the 'States' but I'm sure there are a few in the UK.

    Yes interceptor, I'm the masochist that bought it. It needed a lot of work but I think it was worthwhile to save it as they're quite rare in these parts. According to the previous owner it came from Canada originally but spent some time in South Africa.

    Nice car the Corvair !

    Way ahead of its time !

    I prefer the earlier version myself. It was this one that Ralph Nader condemmed as unsafe due to the nature of its rear swing axle suspension. The wheels had tendency to tuck in after succesive tight turns and the car would spin out !

    The Corvair was also one of the first priduction cars to have a turbocharged engine option.

    Has anyone actually read that Nader book ??
