Do any of you guys recall the Opel Kadett 1.3 (or 1.6) SR which was sold in Ireland from 1980-1984 ?

They usually came in black, red, white or yellow (with black wheel/side arches, and black c.1/4 way up the doors/wings/rear panels).

I always liked the look of them - but I haven't seen one in years?!

Here is a pic of a Vauxhall Astra SR (identical to Kadett except for badges) .....

That pic looks a little different to the SRs I remember which were fully colour coded. Perhaps they were modded or a slightly later model? The majority of the ones I saw were white or black with the odd red one, never saw a yellow one :) I also haven't seen any SR for a while, last time was around 1995. Don't really know a whole lot about them anyway, was always more interested in the Opel Manta and Monza :)

I'd say the one your on about BrianD3 is the GTE, which had a two litre engine and the colour coded bumpers. I think the SR was out first and improved on. I suppose they met their fate like most GTI's and sportscars in general. Fashion statment, wannabe, boyracer, breakers yard.:)

Yes, the GTE was fully colour coded.
I suppose the SR was the 'entry level' sports model in the kadett range, hence cheaper - so more sold here than GTE's.

Funny, I recall seeing more yellow 1.3SR's than any other colour ! :D

I suspect many did end up 'thrashed and bashed', either by 'boyracers' .......or as rally cars :(

Though, perhaps we might get a surprise someday soon and see one at a show

im already working on that suprise silvera :D

this week i should have my hands on a 83 1.8 kadett gte which will be keeping me busy for the winter .
hopefully when i strip it it wont be to bad, although opels from 80/85 dident rust that bad did they.
any one remember the special world cup opels that only came in white
with the irish colours on them?
most of the gte,s were 1.8
    heres a few pics.

    (old opels never die:cool: )

We had from 88-93 what was probably one of the next special editions after that World Cup edition, a 3-door Kadett Olympic, so celebrate the 84 LA Games. Grey metallic with a subtle white stripe, 5-speed gearbox, four-spoke sports steering wheel, dual channel brakes and a pair of added-on spotlights (fitted by the previous owner, subsequently found to have been disconnected). The biggest addition over our 79 Kadett was either the radio or the front headrests. Its amazing the detail a 13 year old car nut picks up from the salesman (probably a lot more than my father did - he drove it a few miles and then kicked the tyres when he got back. Like taking sweets from a baby!)

Hey Manta Mad, have you a website of your Mantas? I just love Mantas - there's an English reg (D-reg, so I guess around 88) for sale in a garage out the road from me, gold metallic - if I had the money and a garage....

Good stuff manta mad ! ........great to hear that there is at least one GTE/SR about !

Is it an import, or original '83 Irish reg ?

Re Rust on 80-85 Opel Kadetts .....
The Kadetts usually rusted first at the rear of the sills/lower quarter panels.
    After that it's anybodys guess.

Where did you come across the 3 x SR's pic ?

Incidentially, I see a black '84 Kadett Berlina 1.2S, 97k miles, c/w alloys, €1,100, in the current Buy & Sell.

Yep, I remember the Kadett 'World Cup' editions. All white with a 'full-on' bodykit attached :D
.....wonder is there even one of those left about the place ?

(I have a few '80's Ople brochures, 1982, 88 and 90...I think the World Cup edition is pictured in one of them!).

    Dilbert75,
'D reg' would make it an '86/'87.
Is it for sale here in Ireland ?
Hatch or Coupe? Any idea of the price ?

    Cheers,
    Silvera.

I worked for an Opel dealer at that time and remember them all very well !

Good solid cars, and as you mentioned rust wasn't an issue, only with the imported Vauxhall versions !

The 1.3SR was a nice little car to nip around in but the GTE's were all 1.8 and they were very fast as they were so light !

I had a little Corsa SR for a long time ..........great car too !

Opel at that time were literally always waiting to be robbed. We used to repair one car EVERY day from theft. That went on for about 4 years ! Thats a lot of stolen cars !

The Ascona SR/E's and Cavalier Sri's were the main targets as they stood out like beacons with their similar black trims and alloys over usually white/red/siver paintwork !

Havne t seen any of the above for years !

I'd guess around that age - seems to be a hatch but I'm not sure. Passed it again today, didn't stop to have a look (too dangerous!). Its in south Co. Wexford. PM me if you want more details.

    Hey manta mad,

Did you mention in another thread that the Kadett GTE was no longer available to you ?

.......and as Dilbert 75 mentioned, have you any plans to set up a Manta site ?
(It would be great to have an Irish Manta site. BTW, there are several free website providers available)
