Hey - I'm tired of lugging my enormous Warwick around with me, so I was looking for a good portable bass for a weak little man. Any opinions on this?

Always handy if you lose your paddle up sheet creek ;)

They're odd, they don't feel like you're playing a "real" bass but the good tones are there in them. I knew someone who had one of the Hohner models many years ago, a decent instrument, but just takes some getting used to. I've a lot of time for Ned Steinberger but, to be honest, I don't know if I could like with the body shape, personally I'd go for something like this if I was in the same boat.

man, i want one of those hohner ones so bad, but what i would like even more is one of ththese bad boys: http://archive.bassplayer.com/z1999/9909/dano.shtml just stick two of these: http://www.music123.com/Seymour-Duncan-SLS-Danelectro-Replacement-Pickups-i146426.music?source=bizrate in it if you feels its needed and away you go. its under 7 pounds in weight making it....under 3 Kilos!!! how much does a standard Precision bass weigh? about 7 kilos...man i'd kill for a danelectro DC bass.

I don't mind the body shape - I played a proper graphite Steinberger a few months ago, and I was used to the shape after a few minutes. I don't really need it for recording or anything, so I don't care too much about tone - just portability. I reckon I might order it.

Yeah, it's great. It's in hospital at the moment though - a piece of the bridge came off at a gig, and I haven't heard back from Warwick about replacement parts...

Warwick have a ropey reputation when it comes to supplying replacement parts. Maybe give Sound Gear in Portabello a ring, they used to be Warwick dealers, might still be or might have some parts lying around.

Sound Gear haven't had Warwicks in the two years I've been going there but they might have spare parts or whatever.

    .....yep, still hate you!

Go for it! I swapped my 5-string for a Hohner B2A DB, a (licensed) copy of the Steinberger with a detunable bridge (the lever drops the tuning from E to any pitch down to around a low B).

    (picture "found" on the internet)
Lovely bass - the pickups can be toggled between active and passive (I don't know why -- active sounds fantastic), and it's neither too heavy nor too big (it's around the same length as a telecaster, and fits in a normal guitar gig bag, with room to spare). It doesn't go out of tune, either.
