Famous Northeasterners

As I'm in exile down South I have to keep the Royal flag flying and the other night I was challenged (by a Cork man) to instance famous Meath people. Aside from some footballers and comedians I struggled badly. And I reckon it's even more difficult for the other counties of the N.E. region. So who have we produced that the rest of the country/world might have heard of - people who, like the proverbial farmer, have made it big in their field?
Can anyone fill in the gaps?

    Meath:
Pierce Brosnan, Tommy Tiernan, Dylan Moran, Hector O'hEochagáin, Francis Beaufort, Matt Barrett (head of Barclays Bank), a load of footballers.

    Cavan:
Myles Dungan (though he grew up in Kells).

    Monaghan:
    Big Tom, Paddy Kavanagh.

    Louth:
Steve Staunton, Gary Kelly, Ian Harte.

Don't forget the Corrs from Dundalk.

I don't think I know of many famous Cavan people, the Butcher boy was one though. He's from Killeshandra. Cathriona McKiernan too although she wouldn't be very high profile. And maybe we can claim Sean Quinn from Fermanagh too, he's closer to Ballyconnell than he is to Derrylin and he owns numerous hotels and the insurance company in Cavan.

Anyone remotely well known outside the Northeast is acceptable. Well...provided they're more substantial than any of the 'I'm a "Celebrity" (y'are yeah!) Look at Me!' mob.
    So we now have...
Meath - the humourous shaken-not-stirred windy high-finance general county:
Pierce Brosnan, Tommy Tiernan, Dylan Moran, Hector O'hEochagáin, Francis Beaufort, Matt Barrett (head of Barclays Bank), a load of footballers, Duke of Wellington, Francis Ledwidge (is he actually famous as poets go?), Damien Farrelly (2fm).
Louth - the soccer, beef, sisters and eurovision county:
Steve Staunton, Gary Kelly, Ian Harte, The Coors, Deirdre O'Kane, Nicky Colgan, Sean thornton, Johnny Logan (really?), Larry Goodman.
Monaghan - the poetic keep-it-country butcher county:
Big Tom, Paddy Kavanagh, Patrick McCabe.
Cavan - the arty cross-country county:
Myles Dungan (though he grew up in Kells), Catriona McKiernan

    Francis Sheehy Skeffington (Socialist Patriot)
General Philip Sheridan (General in the American Civil War)
Sean Quinn (Quinn Cement and Insurance company, almost a billionaire)

I'll clarify later where sinead is from, i know that my sisters old music teacher used to teach her piano and thats in kildallan.

Owens at the moment i think he's still acting, but he's been quiet since. He done a few sketches shown on rte1 last year nothing too special and he went into panto then i think.

his little brother has done over 20 movies now, he was the kid in angela's ashes.

The most famous person from the nrth east area in my opinion noone of yous have mmentioned him and he has his own day. Peter Rice born and rasied in dundalk was astructural engineer, u might know some of his work, sydeny opera house and a lot of others. Theres a Peter Rice day held every year around the world where all the top architects engineers civils. come together and discuss all the new inovations ideas rules that were bent then broke. to me its the biggest, after all is there a corrs day.

Jonathon Swift lived outside Trim for many years as a rector/vicar. Had an affair with a local lass called Stella and the remains of her house are remembered as Stella's Cottage. Don't forget Duke of Wellington (Arthur Wellesley), was an MP for Meath, he and his brother Richard (I think) expanded the British Empire in India, he kicked the French out of Spain, defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, became British Prime Minister, paved the way for Catholic Emancipation, etc.

Oh yeah, the Iron Duke was supposedly born in Trim too. However, there is a difference of opinion about that. Trim folk claim he was born in the town while his parents were en route to Dublin. Dublin folk claim he was born in Dublin, at the site of the present Merrion Hotel. He didn't help the argument by stating he honestly didn't know where he was born. He's the guy famous for the "just because one was born in a stable does not make one a horse" quote that people in our nation take to be a slur on the Irish. Personally I think he was talking about Trim . . . :D
