I know there is such a thing as a usb battery charger for rechargeable AA and AAA batteries.

Has anyone seen any of these in an Irish shop, or where I can buy on the net. There are a few on ebay, but all work out expensive, as they are based in Australia.

    Cheers.

AFAIK USB only gives you 5V output, and at very low power levels, so it'd be a very slow way of charging batteries. Why do you want to do this via USB instead of from mains btw???

Because I have a cordless mouse with two AAA batteries. I travel a lot with work, and to save buying more adaptors etc, I thought it would be handier.

I suppose it makes no real difference. I mean I thought they were smaller.

So where can you buy a normal AAA charger. I saw a nice comact one on www.argos.co.uk but it was only for AA abtteries.

to be honest if I was you i'd probably buy a small usb "laptop" (eg http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=301787&cks=PRL) mouse instead of worrying about charging it... you don't really need to be cordless, do you???
try peats or maplin for the charger. or radionics. or farnell.

USB is 5 or 5.1V and 500mA, which is enough to charge two AA's or AAA's in series, but you would need either a charging circuit to stop when the battery was full or to charge at C10 or lower, ie. 10 Hours to charge the battery, and no laptop can do 10 hours...

500mA - 4 hours to fill a high energy NiMH (2000MAh)- and that's nearly overloading the USB port - not recomended.

I've got something similar to this http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=304831&cks=PRL for about £20 from PCworld in the UK, I cannot remeber the brand though. The one that I have came with both a mains charger and a usb cable to charge with as well.
