Just plot your number down and place powers of 2 above them

And so on, the numbers with a 1 below them are added together, so the example above is 1+4+16 = 21

I thought it started from the other side, you count from the left. As in...

...would be 1+4+8+16=29. Which is why I thought 1 by itself would be the same as 10, or for that matter an entire byte that begins with a one and has seven zeroes. Thanks for clearing that up.
