Windows XP and RAM problem

Hi. This is probably a really easy question to answer so sorry if I appear stupid. I have a laptop with Windows XP and 256 RAM. Or at least, it SHOULD be 256. But it's not. It's 192. In some places (like during start up) it says i've got 256, in other places like the Control Panel and msinfo it says 192. What gives? I figure XP has stolen some of it to use it for something, but it seems to mean that I can't frickin' run games that require 256 minimum. Is there anything I can do short of buying more RAM, which is a bit of a hassle for a laptop I gather.

Sounds like the integrated graphics card is sharing 64 mb of system ram? Your stuck if this is the case cause the GPU will need the ram too. You should be able to tell whether this is the case in the bios.

    Rule No.1

Don't buy cheap pc's if you intend on playing any graphics intensive games. 512mb's of ram is really the min these days especially with xp.

To lazy to type so here's the google answer:

Basic Input Output System. This provides the basic instructions for a PC's hardware, and is coded into the computer's ROM (or Read Only Memory). The operating system (Windows 98, for instance) and applications access BIOS in order to enhance compatibility.

You can go into the bios before your operating system loads to view/configure your hardware configuration. Wouldn't recomend you doing this as you did not know what it was. You can do damage. If you post you laptop model number I can check the specs for you instead.

Dude really - if you don't know what the bios is - leave it alone and read your manual for more info
