19" CRT at the moment. Happy with it, but will go LCD when the prices are a bit better for a decent one.

Never gonna change to LCD until the refresh rates and contrast ratio become half decent.

    Viva la CRT!

Double ditto. At least not for desktop purposes anyhow... Somehow laptop CRT just sounds laborious... :D

    Viva la CRT!

Refrest rates are not an issue (DVI is progressive vs CRT interleave so refresh rattes are not comparable).
Contrast is also not an issue anymore on the high-end LCD's (sonys truly black ones are amazing)

The only advantage would be the slightly better colour on a high-end CRT and the ease at which the change resolutions.

LCD's though have sharper text, no cathode emissions (easier on the eyes), lower power consumption, no screen burn, thinner, lighter, perfect flatness etc...

21" Compaq p1100 crt. Basically a rebranded sony trinitron. Great monitor. I'd love an lcd but the main thing that puts me off is being stuck to one resolution. I use a wide varity of resolutions, from 800x600 for cs to 1600x1200 for desktop. I'd like both tbh. Jes-computer have a very nice benq 19" lcd with 12ms response time for 430e. I'd be tempted.

    21" Sony CRT.
I want to go LCD (only cos I can't find an Atari Jaguar!), but I can't afford it. Perhaps Santa will be nice to me ;)

    Field 1 - 100Hz / 1 = 20ms.
    Field 2 - 100Hz / 2 = 10ms
Average responce time = 15 miliseconds for a good 100Hz CRT

Good TFT these days does 16ms responce so no that's not an issue anymore.
Even my old 17inch Samsung does 25ms which is fine even for fast paced games.

    Currently using a 19" Hitachi LCD at 1280 x 1024 - very nice indeed.

Some incorrect info above, so let's clarify:

    - CRTs are progressive, not interleaved (unless watching TV through them)

    - LCD pixels don't fade to black when they're not refreshed, so refresh rate is not an issue; response time (how quickly individual pixels can change colour) is the thing to watch for.

    - Modern LCDs support pretty much all resolutions <= their stated resolution. E.g. a 1280 x 1024 LCD will happily display 1024 x 768, 800 x 600, 640 x 480, etc. However, this is done by internal hardware scaling, and can look a bit blocky. For games, it's not an issue at all.

All the magazines will tell you that response time is the be all and end all, and you must have <= 16 ms for decent gaming. The decent sizes (19" and up) still only go down to 25 ms response time, which sounds terrible - in practise, I find games work great, and there is no sense of lag or blurring at all, at least on my Hitachi. Older LCD monitors had response times up to 80 ms, which is no doubt why they got a bad rep...

Some LCD monitors have a crap viewing angle - the good ones usually offer 170' or better in both horizontal and vertical axis - this is for all intents and purposes as good as a CRT.

The space savings of an LCD are huge - I went from a 21" CRT to a 19" LCD - the usable screen space is about the same, but the picture is sharper on the 19", and I have about four square feet of desk space back! In fact, I was so impressed that I immediately swapped my second 20" CRT for another 19" LCD.

The only downside is that LCDs have less colour range than LCDs - for the first few days, I thought my DVDs looked a bit washed out. After I adjusted the colour profile in the player software though, everything was back to normal and I haven't looked back since. (All this was a year ago.)

Currently considering the 19" Samsung 930 MP as a possible upgrade to one of my existing screens... built in TV tuner, PIP, and remote control; very nice.

(Of course, CRTs are a hell of a lot cheaper...)

True they can change resolution but they don't look right, even in games. Anyways I like 1600x1200 for desktop as I usally have quite a bit of stuff running at the same time.

Most big sizes come with lower response times like the 19" 12ms one I mentioned earlier for only 430e.

gonna get a big 20" 16ms lcd soon. Been using crt's for years at 1600x1200, and high refresh. Was installing a new comp, with lcd side by side with current crt, and when I looked back to the crt I thought something was wrong with it, was just the better quality of the lcd, so has spurred me to upgrade asap :)

I run a 19" Hansol CRT as my number 1 monitor, a NEC 15" LCD as my second monitor and then a Sony 17" CRT for my thrid monitor. Though I am not using the 3rd at the moment.

I want to upgrade to all LCD's once I have the money though, I find it better providing you get one with a decent refresh rate (20ms or less really).

It's amazing how much time and money come companies will invest in making websites, and then fück it all up because they're too stingy to pay someone a few quid to spell-check it.

Using a 19" CRT here in work. Before that I had 2x17" LCD screens (all DELL) that I was never too fond of. That one silly missing pixel in the middle of the screen just bugged me, and I could never get the colours exactly the same on the two screens, though they were identical models.

Jazis, I sound fierce picky just now.

Yep, the "bad pixel" is really putting me off getting an LCD.

If you buy one from a shop, a demo one, that you have actually seen working, you know you are safe. But seriously, what shop sells LCDs (in Cork) for a non rip-off price? So online is the way to order, and then you don't know what ya gettin'

jes.de do a no pixel fault guarantee for an extra €30. well worth it if your spending big on a new tft and are worried about it. and they are quite cheap.
