Microsoft has announced what it hopes will be a new attack on piracy - the Redmond-based giant has decided to give away free software to those who bought machines with fake copies pre-installed.

Come on... Whose going to be stupid enough to admit to MS that they have a fake copy? Maybe they might catch a few particularily idiotic kiddies, but thats about it... MS hold very tight licensing with vendors, none would dare use an illegal key...

IIRC they had an event in the US a while back, where if you brought along a pirated copy they gave you a legit copy, providing you promised not to pirate again.

What Doodle said. Its probably more to find bad vendors than anything else.

To get a replacement copy of Windows XP, PC users will need to send off their receipt and complete a witness statement, revealing where they bought their knock-off software.

Around 29 percent of software applications in use in the UK are thought to be pirated, according to analyst group IDC.
So you've to rat someone out to get a copy..

IIRC here and Italy used to have the worst records in the EU for pirated SW not sure now.
