    knoppix is Linux not Windows...

powerhousedan: id say it would be very tricky... surley even a compact install of Longhorn would be larger that 700mb

what about getting yourself a bootable USB flash drive? They can be had in various sizes up to (and possibly over) 4gb.

There's various Windows PE editions floating around the net, the idea being you end up with a knoppix-like CD based windows system. Have a google.

Long horn isnt released. Its not out till end 05/06. You are thinking of XP-64 Bit edition mabe ?? because i have that and that is availible on CD Or download Via Microsoft website. Are you sure you aren't mixing up XP-64 Bit edition and Long horn. Long horn is the complete new windws due to come out 1 or 2 years from now...64 Bit obviously.

Windows XP-64Bit edition is Just a 64-Bit edition of XP and supports 64-Bit applications but its useless now because itsstill beta and also no drivers are out yet in 64-bit.

And i Wouldnt like the Idea of Windows on a CD :S The speeds are too slow ...Also you wont be able to do anything..if u try to creat a Folder...That means you CD-RW Drive is going to have to Burn that folder to CD Which isnt possible to do this. various problems like this...It would be too messy...

Speed isn't great, but it's not too bad spec dependant. Also, you can access your harddrive(s) so you don't need to write to the disc.

The idea is that you use it for troubleshooting more than anything else.

Is xp64 free? And does it support everything that the normal 32bit XP supports? I think I've read about 64bit viruses so that kinda worries me.

The operating system runs from the memory(RAM), not the hard disk or CD. When you boot up, the OS loads everything that it thinks it will need into memory. When you use something (say Task Scheduler) that has not already been loaded, then a delay will occur were the OS searches its directory for the program or dll or whatever.

But Windows does like to write to it's own directory so the computer may stall everytime it tries to. I'm not sure how it would work on a read-only drive. Also it would take ages to install it to a DVD. In fact, it probably isn't possible. The install program would need to be able to burn.

I think he knows full well what he is talking about. There have been leaked developer conference previews of Longhorn floating around on warez sites for a few months...

Lets be fair, XP gives people enough trouble, and MS want them to move to Longhorn?!

Some real progress has been made lately in writing to NTFS partitions. Once that's sorted in Knoppix, I can ditch Windows PE for system recovery. :)
