Firstly, I hope this is in the right forum.

I am going to buy a new PC and I would like to get one with a DVD rewriter. I think this allows you to play and copy DVD's

What is the best type of DVD rom I should be looking for in relation to speed etc. I will most likely buy direct from Dell so I may not have much of a choice but if anyone can recommend other value for money outlets it would be much appreciated.

I see on the recordable discs that there is a + and - sign. What's the difference between them.

Any replies or any advice would be most welcome.

Differences between + and - DVDs are in the way data is written to and stored. More infor can be found by gooleing for DVD Formats or similar, here's
    an example.

As for what to buy, I have a Pioneer DVR 108 which is capable of writing 16x speen + and - R, and 4x speed dual-layer +Rs. The NEC ND3500 is similar, and a little cheaper too.

Don't buy Dell, you won't be given a choice or a decent PC, unless you pay far above the odds for that.

Check www.komplett.ie for PCs and DVD writers. Probably the best value and best spec available.

    Cheers Jor.

I had a look at the website re: types of DVD discs and I am a little wiser now.

I also had a look at Komplett.ie and found the prices very reasonable but a little too technical for me. I will try to get one of my friends to explain the jargon and compare it with my present system.

I have a dell PC at present and I find it fairly good but then again it is mostly used for typing letters etc and by the kids playing PC games. I suppose it doesn't get that much use or abuse.

    Thanks for the response
