    from bbc
    Redknapp quits as Portsmouth boss

    Redknapp 'felt unwanted'
Harry Redknapp has resigned as manager of Portsmouth.

Redknapp said his decision was not a result of his row with chairman Milan Mandaric over the appointment of Velimir Zajec as executive director.

"It is something I have been thinking about for a while. I made it without any pressure from the chairman or the board," said Redknapp.

Zajec will take charge of first-team affairs, but the club would not confirm assistant Jim Smith had also left.

Redknapp said he had not made any plans for the future.

"I will now spend a short period of time to rest, recharge my batteries before contemplating my future," he said.

"I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to the chairman and his board for their support, to the players and all the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic to me and the club during my time at Portsmouth FC."

Redknapp took over at Fratton Park in March 2002 and led the club to Premiership promotion the following year.

The club have made a strong start to this season, and Redknapp was named manager of the month in October.

However, his relationship with Mandaric has increasingly come under the spotlight.

Last season the threatened to quit when he believed Mandaric was planning to sack Smith.

And he again said he had considered leaving when Zajec was appointed, saying he did not want to work for a director of football.

I'm well pissed off cos I thought Wolves might tempt him...Sad day really.

    Mike.

Wow... I can see Portsmouth crumbling now. He was the heart of that clubs success. They'll find it very hard to replace him.

I'm sure Harry will be back managing before the end of January.

With Yakubu out until Christmas Portsmouth to go down at 5/1 looks interesting. Especially with Palace churning out a few points.

Well, it's been on the cards for a while.

Some Chairmen don't know when they are on to a good thing.

    Wolves anyone?

Well that's Portsmouth down the toilet then. Seriously Mandaric must be an idiot to let Redknapp go. Before he took over they were a struggling Division 1 team and he instantly turned them into a decent Premiership outfit that had no real relegation worries. Instead of trying to undermine him and every turn, Mandaric should have done everything in his power to keep him at the club.

I might just have a few quid on them to go down now.

I think it's a good move for Portsmouth to be honest. I feel that Redknapp is the kind of manager who's suited to the role of relegation battler. When he was given money at a stable West Ham, he squandered it on Florian Radicoiu, Titi Camara, Rigobert Song and Marco Boogers. Same thing happened at Portsmouth, Redknapp wanted to put money into risky foreign signings whereas Mandaric wanted to build for the future and develop a youth academy. Mandaric's treatment of Redknapp was awful but I can understand that he's concerned with the long-term future of Portsmouth.
