occurs that I ought begin to learn what my mac can do for me, prefarably before I've a new OS nxt summer!!

Amazon is returning me dozens of options, was wondering if anyone had found some particularly useful or crap? I don't need a two chp tutorial on creating new users or anything, a little more advanced would be the ticket

Theres one called panther the missing manual, i think you can get it through the apple store.

Had a flick thourgh It, and it seems to give plenty of advanced tweaks and advanced terminal stuff.

What type of "stuff" are you looking to learn in it ?

see there's a question without an answer. I am getting involved in a design setup, so a fair bit o publishing work, web work (incl networking) so a range really.

I'd recommend the Missing Manual (by Pogue/O'Reilly Press) as well. Maybe, if you have the chance, you could look through the Mac bookshelves in the basement of Waterstone's, they're quite good.

the Missing Manual books are pretty good alight:

found the Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Panther Edition (like a manual with some good tips) good especially when moving on from Jaguar - the more recent Mac OS X Power Hound, Panther Edition (more 'hint' based approach) is sitting on my online bookshelf being clicked through at the moment :)

then there are various books covering more specific topics like the iLife Aps to in-depth 'under the hood' Unix - http://mac.oreilly.com/ lists out their publications...
