C/C++ & SQL software engineer looking for work or an advice on relocation to Ireland

    Hello,

Some time ago I decided to relocate from my home country of Belarus due to increasingly worsening political and economical situation. Ireland is an excellent choice for me since it’s an English-speaking country and its visa-obtaining procedures seem to be very fast and clear comparing to that of USA, UK or Australia. Right now I'm slowly working my way through the recruitment sites listed in one of the sticky threads on that forum, but I decided that more personal approach wouldn't hurt as well, thus this post here.

I would greatly appreciate any advice concerning the relocation process and chances of getting the work offer without face-to-face interview. I'd like to note straight away that I don't really expect someone to pay for my relocation (although it would be very nice), so I'm ready to relocate at my own expense at minimal notice. I'm also considering traveling to Ireland on tourist visa for a month or so, if it turns out that getting the job without face-to-face is impossible. I'd like to avoid it, though, since it could set me back for quite a sum of money.

If someone knows about an opening for a C++ or SQL developer or a way of posting my resume on any intranet sites or anywhere else where it could get direct exposure to potential employers, I’d be very grateful if you help me out. Please find my resume attached to the post. It’s outlining my 8 years of experience as mostly C/C++ software engineer on more than 10 projects involving different technologies on different platforms both in Belarus and USA.

    Sorry for the long post.
    Sincerely,
    Max

to be honest, unless you are actually in the country in question, it is incredibly difficult to get an interview for a job, let alone actually get one.

but that leasds to a catch 22 situation, do you move and try and get a job, or do you try and get a job, and then move?

Well, I'd moved if it wouldn't be so incredibly difficult to get somewhere from non-EU ex-Soviet country. And it's hard to estimate the funds needed to stay in country before getting a job not knowing how long it would take.

I don't know about Ireland, but it's next to impossible to get a visa to UK or USA without a job offer or relatives living in there, or unless you're booking a tour with VERY expensive tour agency. Most embassies are suspecting that a visa applicant is going to stay in country illegally, and it's hard to blame them for that.

I guess what I was asking in my post is a hint of a big company that may afford to bring staff from abroad, and just swallow the losses if the candidate doesn't fit, like IBM. Or a small one in need of a good developer working for significanly lower than market rates.

    Anyway, any comments are welcome.

Keep an eye on Recruit Ireland, and Monster.ie , but I think it will be a slow process for you. Theres a little bit of a glut of developers here, and you'll be competing against those that are already in Ireland. But it is getting better I think. The level of C & C++ isn't that common here so maybe you get lucky!

    Good luck with it.
