In a general sense, yes... But not ALL metal, obviously.

If used correctly, they can make heavy music even heavier. Strapping Young Lad and KMFDM for example. Or to add some cool effects, as in Type O Negative.

    Keyboards rule!
Prog and power metal just wouldn't be the same without them

Yeah,Children Of Bodom have a pretty good keyboardist.
    As do dimmu borgir.

Yes Keyboards can indeed be very fking good. Dimmu Borgir probably being the best example of this, but Sonata Arctica and Children of Bodom both have superb keyboarders, and theres so many other bands about with great keyboarders too, they can definately add to a band if done right.

pianos, organs and harpsicordes sound great

Had to say no, not having been given a maybe option. There's just to much keyboard abuse in metal for me to want it in the genre. I like to hear it from people like Rammstein, but christ you haven't heard music ridiculed until you've heard some of that goth synth-metal crap that's out there. **** like Type O Negative almost makes me too ashamed to tell people I like metal, in case they think I like that twoddle.

When you listen to a band like Children of Bodom, you just can't possibly say no to keyboards. However, Dream Theater do piss me off at times with Jordan Rudess trying to fit into a song when he should clearly not bother. He ruins a load of their songs IMO.

Tell it like it is, brother :D

Sometimes yes, often no. Besides, midi stuff can be played on guitar and has been the case for 20 odd years, see mid-late 80's Iron Maiden.

Midian-and-before era Cradle of Filth, My Dying Bride, Type O Negative; yes
Most other times, a loud hearty no.

i've never thought Jordon Rudess was trying to fit, I think he's DT's best keyboarder...

John Lord...Deep Purple...EVH? But if you mean really heavy stuff then probably not. Theres no room even for melody in that.... ;)

Keyboards are often great in music (such as COB's, sonata arctica and Sigh's stuff), but what about pianists?

There are alot of good piano pieces in Arcturus' music, and I think it's quite brilliant....

Or does "keyboards" refer to piano's and keyboards alike?

Yeah, so bollocks like rammstien have great keyboards but type o are an embarrasment to metal...only one of these bands appeared on stage with giant dildos strapped to thier groins and shot fake jizz on each other..guess which one

Everyones so far forgetting one of the best bands to use keyboards...faith no more!!

As a keyboard player I say yes, tis refreshing to hear it done well.

Except of course that you can't afford us in your metal bands....

Theres a nice bit of piano in Ozzy's Revelation(Mother Earth) which I just happen to be listening to. Just before the solo theres a piano solo. Anyone thinks that certain instrument should not be used is just narrow minded.

There's nothing wrong with keyboards/synths, just synths used improperly (big problem in the 80's) and often in place of guitars. Bad move. However, just listen to Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, that album is a masterpiece and uses synths very wisely. It makes all the difference. It's not the instrument, it's how it's used.

Black Sabbath - Who Are You? One of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

    Nuff Said.

Come on, Ray from the doors is a legend. Dream Theater, gives it great feel. Deep Purple, adds so much. Its really suits melodic rock/metal imo

The Doors are cool. But hardly metal. Some good videos of them on the Winamp site. actually theres some new (well recent) and old Zep stuff up their too.

I think taking a look at Dream Theater will solve this one...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 102 ✭✭thegogz

this has to be plainly a matter of taste in some cases like children of Bodom and most black metal yes definalty but definalty not all metal band should have them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,858 ✭✭✭Undergod

Synthesizers definitely fit in with some metal (Dream Theater again), and other keyboards can be excellent in songs (church organs! I think Ingwie Malmsteen has used harpsichords), but synthesizers are abysmally crap in most music, because it's difficult to use them well.

Some interesting facts. But I still say no way!
