    HI All,

Call me stupid, but I have a few questions I hope you can help with. I am looking to add Wireless Internet connection to my PC (and soon to be Laptop) at home. I dont want to run cables all over the place, but would like to be able to maybe set up a wireless network so that I can use the PC without cables and then in the future (bout 6months) enable my Laptop to connect wireless to the internet. The connection I have at home will be broadband.

I need to know exactly what I will need to do the above. If anyone has any suggestions, even of the products/manufacture which is best, I would appreciate it.

    Voodoo

The basics, not the cheapest approach, but fairly stable
1 wireless router, with an RJ45 WLAN port, supporting 802.11g preferably, supporting WPA security ideally.
1 wireless 802.11g PCI card for the desktop, supporting WPA ideally
1 wireless 802.11g PCMCIA card for the laptop, supporting WPA ideally

Preferably a decent operating system, windows 2000 or XP

    That's about it.

Beyond that, list your priorities 1 to unimportant.

Routers with a print server, so you can use the printer without having the PC on.
Router with support for net filtering subscription and logging, for trying to keep the kids away from porn sites.
Router with support for a USB key or HDD so can be used as a file share.

    or for home business stuff
Router with serial connection so you can have a ISDN or analog modem as backup for business purposes.
Router that supports DDNS, and VPN for connection to your computer from outside.

you can get routers that have a built in DSL modem, but thats probably not requires as it's usually provided with the DSL connection.

Hi guys, mind if I join in? I'm in the same boat as yourself Voodoo.

Will a wireless router allow you to share files between the PC and the laptop or is it just for sharing the broadband?

And can you use the DVD burner on the PC from the laptop?

The basic wireless router and wireless cards just replace the network cards and network switch. It will allow your PC and laptop to communicate over TCP/ip, so allowing them to access shared resources on each other, provided you set up file shares on windows correctly.

Using the DVD burner over the network, depends on version of windows and what you're trying to burn I think. I haven't tried with XP, but it should be possible. Doesn't appear to work with inCD driver on windows 2000.

There's an extension to Nero Burning ROM 6 called neronet designed for this sort of setup. http://www.nero.com/us/631934399251526.html, but requires 2 copies of Nero, so is expensive.
