Laptop to TV?

    Hey,
Any advice on how to put your laptop through to your TV? I have been told a VGA lead would do the job, BUT my TV doesn't have a VGA input. It does however have a SCART input and I know you can get a VGA/SCART lead. Will this work? Or do I have to buy some software?

If your laptop has S-Video, just connect that up.

like the port that you would connect your keyboard to on a normal desktop, but with more pin holes.
small round with 5 pin holes.

    Normally* you need the following;
    1) a graphics card with S-video output (looks a bit like a PS/2 mouse port if that helps, if not Google images will tell you)
    2) a small cable with an s-video plug on one end and a composite plug (yellow) on the other.
    3) a female/female composite video lead (yellow)
    4) a SCART plug with in/out switch and 3 composite ports
    5) one or two composite audio leads
    6) a jack/composite audio adaptor

Plug the small lead into the s-video port, connect the composite end into the female/female connector and the composite lead from the other side of the F/F plug to the SCART's composite video input. Connect the audio adaptor to the sound card's output (or auxiliary if your card has one) and plug the composite audio lead(s) into the audio inputs on the SCART.
You should now get colour video and (stereo if you have two o/p leads) audio on the TV.

*If you can find a long S-video to composite cable or better yet a scart/svideo connector that has the right number of pins (to carry the colour signal) you can skip out on 2,3,4 above.

What if you haven't got S-video? My laptop has TV-out but it's not s-video... it looks like the headphone/microphone socket.

Check if it's actually a headphone socket. It's probably not exactly the right size, thus a composite output, in which case you only need one composite cable and, if your TV has no composite input port, a SCART adaptor (plus the sound needs to be connected).

Yep it is a composite output. Does this only carry video? My TV has composite input so would I need a cable from the composite out to the TV and another cable from the headphone socket to the TV?

*edit* oh right I just noticed:
(plus the sound needs to be connected)
