Can anyone tell me how to wipe an NTFS partition off a seagate barracuda 160GB drive? I've just bought it and I'm having trouble setting up the drive. I want to wipe the whole thing and start again as I cannot get rid of the NTFS partition. Will a fdisk /mbr work? Will this wipe *everything*?

Well, there are a number of things you could do. If you have access to a broadband/high speed connection you could get a copy of a bootable Linux distro like Knoppix and use the partition tools to remove the partiton.

You could download a shareware/demo of a partition manager for Windows, or you may have gotten a tool with your hard disk that will allow you to do a "Write Zero" test, which will take upwards of 8-12 hours on a drive that size, but will completely overwrite every shred of data, including partitions, on your disk.

Thats all I can think of right now, but I'll get back if I think of anything more.

In DOS Fdisk should allow you to delete the "non-dos partition"

There is a debug script that wipes the first 512 bytes of the drive where the partition table lives that works well too.

Fdisk/MBR writes to the first 400 odd bytes of the drive - boot sector only -should not affect the partition table.

or downright iggorant - set the HDD to type 17 or type 1 in the BIOS if it has a setting and then try and delete the partition again. This might work since fdisk can't count to 160MB...
