explorer.exe problems

Can anyone help me with this?

explorer.exe is crashing everytime I open a folder that contains pictures. It's really annoying and I'm feeling lazy and don't want to do a full reinstall of XP. I run up to date versions of Ad-Aware and Norton Antivirus a couple of times a week. The windows error report says that either a problem with nt.dll or hungapp is at fault for explorer crashing

You haven't got folders to display as thumbnails by any chance have you?

Sorry I didn't respond sooner It seems to happen when a folder is on any of the view setting except for details

Go to a folder that isn't crashing. Set to details then go into the folder options and tell it not remember each folders settings then apply the current folder to all folders.

It sounds a bit like you have an issue with the side view (trojan prehaps?). It should temp fix it long enough to work out what is going on.

could also be a software conflict. I had the same problem but I cant remember which program was giving the problem. Anyone know a good cure for amnesia?

I've seen this problem before, but I don't think it was Photoshop that was causing the conflict, it was either (Adobe) Premiere or some Pinnacle product. IIRC it only caused problems with folders containing JPEGs of a certain fromat. If you don't want to uninstall software, you can try opening the files directly from mspaint (give the full address to the file, rather then navigating) and saving them as BMPs (and resaving as JPEG/GIF).

[edit]Maybe try delete all files called thumbs.db from your hard drive?[/edit]

    Funny you mention that..

My explorer.exe shuts down when i go into a folder with any video files (.avi, .mpeg) specifically.

Would this be to do with Photoshop as well? I can always erase it as i don't use it very often..

Unlikely to be Photoshop if it's video files. Have you any video editing software?

You must be loaded, paying 700 quid for Photoshop and then just wiping it ;)

I remember having a similiar problem to this, it happened in a few folders that i had set the view to thumbnails on. Problem was that some of the videos/jpegs in that folder were corrupt, and when it tried to thumbnail them over the folders or files, explorer.exe would crash. You having similiar problems to this? Ie... is it only in certain folders?

Yeah I have a backup of my dad's digital camera pics on my machine and they seam to be ok in any of the view settings. I checked out the symantic website and the Nimda worm causes explorer to crash due to a conflict with nt.dll. I downloaded the removal tools and I'll try them to rule out Nimda as a possibility. I'll post the results
