Problems with USB HDD/Enclosure - Rattling

    Hi,

I bought a USB 2.0 enclosure and 2.5" HD off eBay. It worked fine initially but lately it has been more and more unreliable.

It seems to work fine with desktops but on my laptop sometimes it gives out for no reason -- or there's this really horrible rattling/scraping noise --

I can't pin down a reason for it....sometimes its literally working fine and without going near it the whole thing will stop working...then work fine again another day!.....

the rattling noise seems to suggest that the fan is broken. must fans that are in those external enclosures are crap and the bearings brake all the time.

  • I don't think there's a fan in it?? Its not one that has a mains power source........perhaps I'm wrong...

    Rattling scraping noise?

Dude, you hard disk is a mechanical device - if it's making those noises then back it up right now and run the manufacturers diagnostics (may require transfer of hard disk to PC).

Other than that, some hard disks (especially USB powered ones) draw more current than the USB port can supply - this varies from PC to PC and USB port to USB port.
I have a half dozen PC's and some of them will work with USB powered drives, others not - all will work when I use external power though.

Oh - I just remembered - I have a 2.5 inch hard disk which does make odd noises (like you describe) when plugged into some USB ports (ones without enough juice to power it).
It just spins up, resets the heads, spins up again, resets the head over and over.
I actually had two but I left one in that state one day and came back later to find it dead, probably a bad idea to leave in constantly reseting...
The other works fine in most USB ports but requires serperate PSU with others

it could be that your laptop is no giving out enough power on the USB port. go into device manager on the lappy and go into Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Now right click on the ones that say USB root hub and selct properties. under power managemant delselct allow the computer to turn of this device to save power. to this for all USB root hubs.

I dont know if this will do anything but its worth the try
