trace in illustrator

hi you the tool to trace in illustrator.. well I used to us freehand as my vector drawing prog which had a great and multi-optioned trace tool the one in illustrators sucks?? you can't even drag over a whole picture to trace it I use trace all the time, is there a reason for this, should I just go back to using freehand
