Absolutely, but dont let me extend your hopes to thinking the same applies to your trusty digibox. Technically speaking, the Digibox will work with Hotbird but only for a very few channels, which are generally not worth the effort tuning in.

What grabs your interest on Hotbird? You tell me more...being a former sat geek, im sure i can help.

Yeah, welcome back, long time since you were in this neck of the woods.

Sure, drop into #icdg (PLUG!) :)

Before the Thread is totally hijacked, yes a mindish will pick up Hotbird, but it may lose a few transponders in bad weather.

For a list of free channels go to digitalsat.co.uk it has lists of FTA channels on different birds. Or of course, lyngsat.com

i want to access hotbird as fashion tv was removed from the SKY EPG on friday (formerly on astra 2) and now is only available on hotbird

    (HotBird-6
    13 deg East
    10.992 Mhz).

    - i don;t want to lose any of my SKY channels though , can it be done on the existing dish? I don;t mind buying a seperate set top box

    thanks,

I was looking for Bloomberg TV Deutschland, the girlfriend works for a germany company ... wants to keep up with the news.... its on Astra 1F, Astra 1G and Hot Bird 6

don't mind getting a seperate dish / box , but the mini skydish isn't been used at the moment , so better if i can use that ...

Ah yeah, that really shouldnt pose any problems. If you follow this link & find your way down to the Bloomberg TV section (its towards the bottom).....

What you wanna look @ is the "beam" section. If you click on that link, you will see that the channel is given a very wide coverage "band" or beam in Europe. Bloomberg is a very popular german channel so its probably on quite a few satellites.

I would give a guess that it is also located on Astra 19.2 and if it is, i would advise you to turn your dish in that direction as Astra 19.2 generally offer better coverage to ireland...but i could be corrected on this....either way you wont have any real problems getting what you want.

As Bloomberg on both Hotbird and Astra has a SR of 27500 and 22000 respectively, the digibox is capable of viewing them. In terms of convenience, however, I presume you still have a Sky subscription and want to watch the channels on Astra 2D 28E? If so, then you'll have to decide how you want to switch between 28E for Sky and 13E/19E for Bloomberg.

    1. The cheapest + simplest way is simply to have 2 cable runs going to the 2 dishes and to swap them around at the back of the receiver. Alt. you can use a simple manual switch. But this is not very convienent unless you need the exercise ;)
    http://www.satelliteonline.co.uk/ab_switch_manual.htm

    2. A neater solution would be to use a switch controlled by the remote:
    http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cs012.htm

Note that for 1 and 2 you will only be able to watch/record either Sky or Bloomberg at any one time.

    3. Buying an FTA receiver is the most expensive route, but offers the greatest flexibilty - you can watch/record simultaneously. It also allows you greater choice in terms of what other FTA channels you can receive.

a cheap FTA receiver will allow you a lot more choice, i have not seen bloomberg dislayed successfully on a digibox but that may be just my unlucky experience

And it displays properly on a cheapie €99 Palcom DSL4 FTA receiver from Hotbird so it duz :) . Most German channels seem to be on Astra 1 and not Hotbird . Again the FTA receiver will pick them up fine if the dish is poointed at the sat that is .

Have not used Palcom hardware in over a year. Are they still offering huge bang for your buck?

//Side Note: Actually never bought the Digenius in the end because it didnt do NTSC but a Palcom original could[didnt know that at the time] lil sat geek discussion here

Found Palcom to be a very reliable box, very quick with channel hoping and pretty much full with features...a great buy back then and im sure today.
