What is the dfference between the Boss LMB-3 Bass Limiter/Enhancer and a ordinary compressor... I what to buy a couple of Bass pedals, here's what I thinking so far...

    1) Boss GEB-7 Bass Graphic Equalizer
    2) Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus
    3) Some sort of Compression. What do you think? Any suggestions for a good comp?

    Thanks.

the GT-6B as seen here is fairly nice...

Gah, just buy a good amp, it should have a compressor and EQ. If you run an EQ pedal into a **** amp it'll just put **** amp EQ over your pedal EQ, entirely defeating the purpose. Save your wedge and get a good amp. To put it simply, a compressor will, depending on how well it's set up, soften the volume peaks in your playing, generally reduce the difference between your loudest and quietest notes. A limiter will stop your volume at a particular level (threshold) and won't allow the volume to be any greater. If you don't know how to use them, compressors and limiters can do more harm to your tone than good. Ideally, you want as little between your bass and your amp, there is so much that can go wrong when you have a multitude of effects and hardware.

As for effects, use when needed, when they will add to your bassline and add to the song. Don't just lash on a load of effects cos you bought a load and feel like you have to use them. All I've ever used was a bit of fuzz, but only when it would improve the tune to do so. Never thought bass chorus sounded anything but Def Leppard to be honest.

    i have to agree
if i had a load of money to get a load of pedals id prefer to just get a new amp.....

Besides, if you invest in quality equipment and have good fundamental tone, why would you want to soil it with naff effects? Great tone is it's own reward ;)

Ah ha!!! I'm already one step ahead of you all... I've spent over €3000 on an amp, cabs and guitar over the last year and I have found a really great tone.
    I don't like playing through sh*t equipment

    Here's my setup :
    1 Peavey 700watt Firebass Amp
    1 Ashdown 4x10 Deep Cab
    1 Trace Elliot 1x15 Cab
1 Washburn Bantam active 5-String (which I love)
1 AKG WMS 40 GB Wireless System

I don't want an MEP, because they can destory the sound of the amp and the cabs. All I need is a little Chorus, a second EQ (the EQ on the Amp is superb) so I can have a 2 channel setup. And some sort of Compression/Limiter.

I just need you help on what make of pedals to get.

    Thanks.

Hmmmm if you don't know what a compressor or limiter is, than you probably don't need one IMO. However, if you feel you must have all this gear, then this is as good as anything out there

My original question was "What is the dfference between the Boss LMB-3 Bass Limiter/Enhancer and a ordinary compressor"

Not, "What is a compressor and limiter", hell, I wouldn't be in this game if I didn't know that :D The "Enhancer" bit in the Boss is a little confusing. Don't worry anyhow, I've just bought the Digitech Squeeze Bass Compressor, Boss Chorus and the Boss 7-Band EQ. They all seem to have got great reviews.

    Good luck with it anyway...

Cheers.... See, I don't mind spending money on good equipment, and when you are gigging between 2/4 nights a week, I always love to tweak my sound. Keeps it kinda fresh :)

With respect, that EBS pedal would eat the Digitech for breakfast and have passed it before lunch. The Boss/Digitech league are ok, but the likes of EBS and Tech 21 Sansamp are what I'd call good equipment - ie - equipment you could record professionally with.

Edit -> I mean, if you've spent 3K on a rig, why would you want to put it through a $50 processor?

That is very true the EBS and Sansamp are top range models, but then it depends what you are using the equipment for. For live use, all I need is a little chorus/2nd EQ and a little compression, which I'd say the Boss and Digitech pedal will handle lovely. For any recording I do in the studio I use a Bass PODxt. The thing is, I'd never use the POD live as it tries to override the tone of the amp and cabs. If the Digitech doesn't work out, I'll scrap it and get something else. I just love buying and trying out different equipment. :)

Fair enough. Personally, I like to keep it as pure as possible. Different strokes for different folks :D

If you do get bored with them, definitely check out EBS. Very sweet equipment.

I was checking out the EBS website, and they look/sound sweet. Keeping it as pure as possible is good. That's why I staying clear of MEP's, just a couple pedals, which only the Chorus is a true effect :) The rest is just to tweak my sound :) I'll let you know how it sounds.

I got the lmb3 for 40 yos on ebay. I play through a 15" trace combo and i use it for lots for slap to get the twang sound up. Havent tried the GEB7 but if you can get a good price for the lmb3 I'd say go for it. Just dont spend 120 in MM ;)

I like chorus, as you say something fresh once in a while. If you want to have a desent amount of effects why not get a bass pod, have the output set just for the effects and not the amp simulation (obviously your amp is good enough). the compresser is quite good (modelled on the LA-2) as long as you dont turn it up to the last (horrible bass boost sending all tone into obscurity). You get a few different types of chorus, flange and distortion options, they all seem ok.

I must head up to the house of music in Cork...apparently they have some EBS stuff!!As for effects I'm a fuzz man myself but thats cos I can't afford anything else!
