Hard Disks or IDE controller dodgy???

    Howdy,
I've got a bit of a troublesome computer, which every so often decides it doesn't wanna boot up, at times taking AGES to do the IDE check, and then sometimes failing to find some windows files. Sometimes it fails to check the second IDE drive, and then when I disconnect it, it boots fine (sometimes).
When I reconnect that drive a bit later on, it will detect it and allow me to read from and write to it etc.
I've downloaded Maxtors' PowerMax utility and checked both disks, and it tells me that both are fine (both Maxtor).
Also a scandisk returns no errors there too.....
Any ideas? Is this an IDE controller acting up, or one or both maxtors going belly up?????
    Cheers
    Ken
