Either online or preferably a shop in Dublin....

From what i've seen, iPod's are at a fairly fixed price regardless of where you go.

Not sure if Bank Of Ireland are still offering an active link for a % off in the Apple Store.

Get one delivered from amazon.co.uk and you'll save yourself about €40 on shop prices here. Warranty is worldwide so it doesn't matter too much where you get it from.

Agreed. Cormie's iRiver thread spoilings are getting very tiresome.

Jehovah's Witnesses seem to think they're doing the same thing, doesn't mean people want to listen to them though. Often though people see them as nuts who are a nuisance and get doors closed in their faces.

Yeah, this is about the 10th thread i've seen with cormie pestering people about an iRiver.

I've got a 10GB iPod which i've never had problems with - battery on it is still amazing after almost a year.

The iPod, like everything, does have some flaws though. But have heard some real horror stories about the iRiver. Also, some things worth noting, is the iRiver is..

.. slightly bigger than the iPod.
.. have no significant after-sales support in the UK.
.. and for those who are all against the iPod battery flaw we've all heard so much about (but honestly hasn't affecting mine in the slightest), the batteries in the iRiver suffer the same fate as the iPod. Possibly even more difficult / costly to replace as at least Apple do offer a service whereas iRiver do not!

But it's really up to the buyer to decide which MP3 Player is best for them!

If somebody posts about a new deal from eircom like their talk time monthly thing, I'm sure it will get many replies advising to go to utv talk etc. Same thing here. I'm only advising.

Slightly bigger than iPod: As I stated, if the ipod came with as many features as the IHP, it would also be bigger, if you want somewhat the same features, you are adding mass bulk to your ipod

I've heard great stories about cust support etc

There are replacement batteries available for iRiver. The iRiver battery will last longer than the iPod battery. In life, in use.

I have an iPod Mini, which an American friend bought on my behalf; it was $299 (€230). It's only 4GB, but I actually prefer that, because I can swap songs on and off if i want. I'm like a kid: put out all the toys on the floor at the same time and I never play with any, but put out two or three favourites and I get good play value!

I love it to bits, and have been making playlists for various purposes - I have a housework playlist (Moll Dubh a' Ghleanna, La Mer, l'Internationale, Take the A-Train...) that I can dance along to with hoover and duster, and am working on a writing playlist, a cycling playlist (at the moment I'm mostly just playing Motherland by Natalie Merchant).

So if you want to get one, the US prices are much keener. I don't know how much the iPod Mini is in the Irish Apple store - can't even see it there; when I was drooling I checked, and I think it was something horrible like a third dearer, but this may be hallucination.

On the other hand, you could look at one of Creative's mp3 players - they have lots more features than the iPod Mini (radio, etc), hold 5GB rather than 4GB, and are cheaper; best of all, they're made in Ireland. And they're stylish, very poshe indeed.

Here's some pictures of the Creative Zen Micro from Gizmodo, by the way:

ebay is proabably the cheapest place to get them, espcially now with the weak dollar.
I also would recommend the iRiver over the iPod. I see no problem with mentioning it, I only found out about it from reading threads on boards, it is not like an iPod is a dud item or something but the iRiver is also cheaper and has all the extra functions, at least research it a bit to see why people are recommending it so much.

The fashion and support factors defnitely count in ipod favour. The price difference is negligible!

Ah yes, the fashion!, hope you have your frilly nylon panties pulled right up tight. If you have a negligible €40 taking up space in your wallet I'll gladly dispose of it for you. If you were to buy an iPod with all the accessories that the iRiver and many other mp3 players have as standard it would be about €500.

Why do most cost less? cause they don't spend a fortune on advertising and let word of mouth do the job.

Support isn't a problem, from what I have seen on iRiver forums, they will replace a faulty player no problem.

As for not having a battery replacement service, well it doesn't need it.

iRiver uses a superior Lithium Polymer battery that is rated for 3000 recharges.
Meaning if you where to recharge it every day (unlikely as it goes 18 hours on one charge), it will only need to be repalced after about 10 years.

The iPod uses an inferior Lithium Ion battery which is rated for only 300 recharges. Meaning if you recharge it every day it will need to be replaced after just 1 year.

I'd say the best thing to do is to go have a look/try both out. I much prefered the Ipod myself and its better suited to my needs.

Sorry you haven't got much in the way of tips for places to buy.

Mods - please oh please can we just get an iPod (or portable mp3 player) sticky and just get cormie to direct the uninformed to THAT post. It's the same advice and the same debates weekly and it's also on Home Ent and even Computers. I'm all for helping new people etc. but a bit of common sense would be good. :D

    Thanks for your time.

Here is the post I am directing people to, that's what I posted above. Simple but then people start to get agitated for me trying to help. Then people like yourself and Noelrock give me bad rep. Use your time more constructively. Giving bad rep to somebody you don't know on a message board website is not constructive. And it's hardly constructive criticism either.

Rubbish. As other people have pointed out the iRiver Lithium Polymer kicks the shìte out of the iPod battery. They also facilitate battery changes if you ever need one.

You can also do it manually for less than 25 euro. How much does the iPod battery which is much more likely to need replacing cost?? Ive heard it's approx €100. Seriously, did you just make up this stuff about iRiver?

Not sure where you got that from - Apple's own manual says roughly 1500 charges, if memory serves?

I'm just looking for some feedback on this, I can get a new Ipod from a friend, it's 3rd generation, 15GB comes with all the cables and the Ipod dock. €200 is this good value. Or is it better to spend €110(with student discount in the apple store) more on the 4th generation 20GB and 4 extra hours of battery life?
    thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭IrishMike

Spend the extra cash mate the guarantee alone would make it the better option
Plus the battery on the 15gig ipod would have started to fade by now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 786 ✭✭✭center15

It's a nearly new ipod, been used for only about 10 hours at most. It's a replacement for one that he dropped and they sent him a new one. I'm undecided because it's still a ipod for €200 including a dock which is usually an extra I think.

I'd go with his one. Try haggle a bit more though. If you are going to buy a new one, I'd go with the 20 or 40gig iRiver IHP series.

Thanks for the advice. By the way cormie are you an iRiver salesman, no offence but there's not need to mention a iRiver everytime a ipod is mentioned.
