Television add freaking me out

Bit strange for a thread- but I am getting increasingly freaked out by our anti-smoking adds here (and I have never even smoked).

The one which is totally doing my head in at the moment is the one where a surgeon introduces a scene with "This is an Aorta, the main artery out of the heart"- and proceeds to squeeze ghastly yellow gak out of it.

I feel physically ill looking at the add- and not in a morbidly fascinating way- my fiancee is a remote control hog, so I don't get the chance to switch channel.

The myriad of adds with gruesome accidents caused by drink driving never hit me in the pit of the stomach in the manner that this add does.

    Thoughts?

I've never actually seen the ad in it's entirety. Up until a year ago I was a smoker and religiously looked away every time it came on in case it might educate me, and since I've stopped I haven't really been watching tv.

Well the ad is doing it's job then.

    Good.

Hope this imagery appears on cigarette packets soon.

The ad is disgusting. Mmmm cholesterol.
I don't smoke, but I'm sure my aorta is about that clogged with grease. Nothing better than a fry-up!

yeah I know the ad you're taking about. I was eating my dinner when it appeared on the idiot box tonight, most appealing when I am trying to eat !!!

I know. Was watching it the other day while having scrambled eggs for breakfast

Worse, far worse though is the smoking ad with the lung cancer guy. Freaks me out BIG time. There was another bad one with a woman breathing through tubes connecting her to a machine in the kitchen, and you could really hear the labour involved in each breath :(

    These ads are effective.

Those Nico ones are a waste of time and money.

Those Nico ones are a waste of time and money.

I disagree, they keep certain sectors of society off the streets while they trawl 'round the megamalls looking for the NICO fragrance they saw advertised on teevee.

It's scary how many people think NICO is actually a fragrance.....

Don't knock the ad, it could be an effective way of getting people to quit their antisocial habit .... of watching too much tv.

i have to say, i think the imahges on boxes will become something of a "gotta catch 'em all" scenario, i know they wont bother me and it'll just be a matter of which one did i get today? :D

sad, i know..... there'll be some weirds walkin into shops, browsing the packets lined up on the wall and pointin out one they dont already have and askin for that specific box!

A lot of ads telling you to stop smoking make me want a cigarette. Especially the ones that go on about how addicted I must be.

the new ad with the man who suffers from lung cancer, with an iron lung and he has to cover a hole in his throat every time he wants to talk, is the most effective ad ive seen to date. he says he is going to see his daughter in a few days or something like that, then it cuts to a frame saying the man died shortly after filming the ad.

that said tho, it only takes a few films with the coolest, badest characters with their fookin zippo lighters and women to put a bad message out to young people

Dunno if thats how they spell it but thats wht he has done!
Joe garcia did it in the film "Dead Again" and smoked through it! Disgsting.....worse nearly than the aorta, which makes me feel v sick!

Funny you should say that. I noticed the ad on a few times this weekend and for the first time I saw what I thought to be a couple of subliminal 'flash frames' just as we get to the end of the traechia/windpipe.

I still can't make them out, but try taping the ad and going through it slowly.

I smoke and those ads just freak me out and make me panic and want to light up. They were written by non-smokers obviously!

I find the aorta ad disgusting. I don't smoke myself, but some of my friends do - whenever they see the ad they talk about how disgusting it is. Then five minutes later they're off having another smoke! Obviously it disturbs a lot of people, but not enough to make them actually want to stop :(

I can't watch it either - gross - is it me or do they deliberatly have it on at dinner time...maybe it is an anti-obesity add also as I can never eat when it is on so I can't imagine how anyone could...

Well the ad is doing it's job then.

not really, the one that was turned off wasnt a smoker

and the one that wasnt turned off, was a smoker.

Break up with her. It's the only way.

I might be missing something but how does smoking clog up your arteries? Surely it's years of bad food and lack of exercise etc? Would it not be more appropriate if the ad went along the lines of:

"This is the lung of a 40 year old smoker"
Cut to scene of the lung having all the black tarry deposits being scraped off.

Actually now I've just gone and reminded myself of my old Junior Cert Science text book which had a picture of a smoker's lung and a healthy lung side-by-side. It was quite freaky to see the difference in colour. The smoker's lung was all black and horrible and the non-smoker's was a presumably healthy shade of light-brown :)

About the ad with the guy with the tubes up his nose promising to see his daughter who them subsequently dies before he gets the chance, that one freaks me out far more than the others. It's just so sad (In the unhappy rather than the loser sense)....

Have none of you seen the other ad with the brain being cut open then? Shows the brain of someone who died from a tumor or some such. Brain gets cut open and theres a big blood cloth dribbling out in the middle. Fairly sick TV viewing but should be enough to put people off the cigs.

It's certainly a good deterrant anyway. I don't feel like lighting up anytime soon.

I dont see how it works, as most people will just switch the channel immediately anyways.

I believe there is a poster campaign of it as well. its disgusting.

Wow! I haven't seen that one. What channel is it on? Probably not on until after the 10 o'clock watershed though.

Those ciggie ads frighten me, especially the one (I think it's an english ad) with the girl talkin about how her dad died from cancer. My da smokes at least 30 player navy cut a day as did his parents. his father had other ilnesses too, but the smoking made his circulation so bad that the doctors wanted to amputate his legs and the family had to decide what to do, he died shortly after, my grandmother had emphazeema for years and died of a stroke so she got a slow and painful death as well as quick and painless!
Maybe they should show some other diseases besides cancer on those ads, because there are plenty more out there!!!
