PC World in Blanch have a 25 pack spindle of 4x dvd+rw's (Imation) for €29.99. Funnily enough they have identical dvd+r's for the same price. not sure if that makes it a bargain or not, as i did a price check on them and you can get them for $19 in the US, but it might be considered cheap for ireland. anyone know how the other retailers shape up?

Think that's not bad. Komplett do a 5 pack for €7.10. I'd say they might be priced wrong.

    make sure they are rewritable
rw can be on +Rs without them being rewritable
afaik it refers to them being able to be written to more than once

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

    in that case, BARGAIN ALERT!

What's the difference between rewritable and "being able to be written on more than once"?

I think what he is trying to say is that a re-writable you can erase and write again maybe 1000 times or so. Any CD writable or DVD writable allows you to write a disk, leave it open and add more content.. but you cant erase the disk and use it again.

    That explains it nicely. Thanks.

Fair play to you - I understand it now.

exactly they can be left open to be written to again
but you cannot erase what you have put on the disc

if the disc just has rw but does not say rewritable then it can not be erased
    it's just to confuse you

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,478 ✭✭✭tribble

    To further confuse you.

If a disk is +RW format or -RW format compible it may be of two types, R or RW.

    R = write once
    RW = rewritable

    So...

    +R = +RW standard write once
    +RW = +RW standard rewiteable
-R = -RW standard write once
    -RW = -RW standard rewiteable

There is also DVD-RAM which is making something of a comeback (fastest rewritable disk is currently a 5X DVD-RAM) - but these are rare in PC drives (only LG and Panasonic make them)..

i got some imation dvd+rws in pcworld on special ages ago and they are really good so would heartily endorse them, they work on everything i've thrown them into, ps2, xbox, normal dvd player and cheap and nasty pc dvd drive.

they're defo RE-Wirtable though, not just write once media.

it's marked in several places on the disc.

oh, and as for the writing on a disc more than once, but not erasing them that's multisession, and afaik all dvd/cd media and drives these days support multi-session.

    afaik dvd-r cannot be multisessioned
whereas dvd+r can be multisessioned hence they put rw on them even though they are not erasable/rewritable
however I looked at the ones in pc world and they are rewritable
    good price

If it's dvd+rw then it's simply rewriteable. Nobody would put RW on a record once disk. Also multisession means that after you burn and do not close the disk you can continue to burn if there is still available space. This can be done on all formats DVD-R and DVD+R and rewriteables.

if you like i can show you a +r disc that has rw on the disc but is not rewritable it is a datasafe disc

again afaik you can not leave a -r disc open although i have never tried

no that you mention it, i just looked at a TDK DVD+R and it has RW written on it as well. talk about confusing people.

why on earth would they put RW on a disc that isn't re-writable? it was the standard for CD's to be either R or RW so why confuse things now?

Yeah - My Verbatims do too.
It's technically correct - the disks do conform to the DVD+RW standard, it's just they're not rewritable.
    They should leave it off.

    thank you

    apology (cough) civilservant(cough)

yes i agree it is dumb that s why i mentioned it in the beginning as if you did not look too closely you could easily buy them thinking they were rewritable

what i was told was that dvd-r are not or were not multisessionable ie dvd-r are doa (disc at once)
dvd+r are multisession and they were using it to highlight that you could write to the disc more than once

    but it is just confusing

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,478 ✭✭✭tribble

Peronally I just prefer the DVD+RW's better error correction.
I don't reallty care for multisession and if I want UDF I use DVD-RAM.

I'm not apologising for TDK's mistake. Did you buy the disk knowing it was record once or rewriteable?

it's not a mistake its on datasafe, verbatim, tdk and if you look at the argos catalogue you can see the rw logo on a box of imaiton +r discs

    it is standard

i knew they were record once i was just mentioning it to other people in case they made a mistake

It is a mistake. If it can only record once, then it should be +R. Rewriteables should be RW. It confuses people to say otherwise.

it was a mistake for you to post in the first place as you clearly don't know what you are talking about

we know the way it should be with +R and +RW but that is not the way it is
someone like you jumping in half cocked only adds to the confusion for people

perhaps next time you might do some research before you shoot your mouth off

It's unfortunate that you took offence to it. Can you agree that TDK, Verbatim et al shouldn't put RW on a disk that can only write once?

i couldn't agree more it is stupidity and only confuses people

btw no offence i'm just a bit bitchy today

    1/ It is confusing.
2/ It is however factually correct - the standard is known as DVD+RW of which there are 2 flavours of discs +R and +RW (dual layer doesn't enter into this).

This is evidenced by the trade association DVD+RW Alliance which governs the format who's website is http://www.dvdrw.com/

damn, they don't make it easy, do they!

    This post has been deleted.

I got a 100 pack spindle in Peats 3 or 4 weeks ago for €25. that said they won't write over 16x, but at that price I don't mind waiting an extra 2 or 3 minutes to burn a disc.

There a shop at the top of capel street (the bolton st end), PC Smart, yellow front, small, beside bargin booze. They have some great prices on media.
    25 cd-r for €7
    25 dvd +/- for €20.
