Mouse X axis not working !!

    Lads,

Mouse .... works fine on other PC's so it aint that, have cleaned it etc.

WinME .... have run AVG for grisoft.com with all updates, Have run SpyBot S+D with all updates. Have got rid of system Restore, emptied temps and run disk cleanup. And nothing .... still same problem.

I have turned down graphic acceleration to "most", resolving mouse pointer problems. Have turned it down to basic acceleration as well.

It works now and again fine .... cant see a pattern though. It moves on the Y axis no problems (up and down) but not on X axis (it moves sometimes fine, other times sluggish, other times kind of on and off, its weird)

I have downloaded a task manager from www.niresoft.com and there aren't any other processes running (from what i can tell anyway) ... turned off all startup items in msconfig.

To be honest ... it has wrecked my head and i dont know what else to try. It was resolved a week ago for 2 days and back again. Using mouse keys on num pad (and that is a bit funny too) My head is fried ... help ??

I take it that this is a ball mouse, if you were cleaning it?
I would say that perhaps one of the rollers is broken, but you say it works on another machine.
Hmmm, do your mouse drivers allow you to set sensitivity or "dead zones" on each axis individually? That could well be it.
I can't think of anything malicious that would cause a mouse to stop functioning on just 1 axis.

Try rebooting windows in safe mode (keep pressing F8 just as windows starts loading)... how the mouse operates in safe mode will rule out or narrow down any number of driver/software conflicts.
See if you can borrow another mouse to try on your PC... again this can help zero-in on the problem.
You didn't say weather your mouse uses a USB or ps2 connection... possibly there is a faulty/loose connection... try wiggling the connection while moving the mouse to see if any slight X-axis movement happens at all.
Also try installing updated mouse drivers, to overwrite any driver files/settings that may be corrupted or maliciously changed.
And don't forget the always popular - remove the device from device manager and reboot method.
I suppose it could be a number of things, but try the above ideas and tell us what happens... even if it doesn't solve the problem, knowing what doesn't work can help a lot.

Heh, it wouldn't surprise me... iirc a few registry edits and you can have your mouse buttons swapped and pointer movement inverted on both axes ;)
Lots of fun as a practical joke.

Right lads, all sorted again ... for now ... (there in lies the problem)

    Yeah ... it was a PS2

Safe mode ... still the same problem.
    Device manager and removed it.
Rebooted .... installed another driver from WinME disk.

Thing is, i've already done that ... replace the driver and it was back in a few days. I'll post back here if it comes back.

    Cheers for the help !!
