I have the Maxtor, and find it to be excellent. Quiet and fast.

I have the maxtor and the barracuda. The maxtor is that little bit faster..... can make all the difference in some situations. I find the barracuda to be far quieter though. It's almost inaudible in my case over the fans but the maxtor is a noisy beast.

Maxtor or samsung as they are ata 133 the other 2 are ata 100, dont know if you really notice the difference.
You dont hapen to have sata on your motherboard? If so why not get a sata hd, even faster.
I have had 1 maxtor fail on me but the other two are still alive and kicking, have them about 1 and 2 years. Samsung in brothers pc, no prob so fas dont know about noise and performance really.

Personally I would only go for Western Digital. In my experiencethey are the most realiable company out there.

I think mator are sh*te. They always seem to break

I've got the Samsung, although it's the SATA version (same drive, different interface) - so far it's been great: fast, reliable and practically silent. I can't really comment on the others, but I'd definetly reccommend the Samsung

Western Digital. Been using their drives for the last few years and haven't had a single bit of bother. Had probs with the Samsung I had before that though :(

I'd go with the WD. Price wise and performance, I've always found them to be best. Had Hitachi disk die before, also a Seagate. But then, you can never tell how reliable a particular disk will be before you use it.

I've had 2 WD drives die on me in the past. Maybe they've got their act together recently though, I dunno.

i have 4 WD drives in my pc 2 of which happen to be the 160 drives. Had no problems with any of the drives so far and would recommend them.

in this pc i have 4 western digi drives, 2 maxtor and 1 seagate. The maxtors run very quiet and fast . Im always afraid that the maxtors will die and my god is the seagate noisy.

I've had 3 maxtor drives die on me before - avoid them. There warranty has gone from 3 years down to one year, wonder why?

My experience with Western Digital is Good. No failures and one of the drives is over 3 years old now. I'll continue to buy & use them because of that reason.

I do like Seagate very much, Western Digital are also very good.
Seagate have also got their 3/5 year warranty, WD also has nice long warranty - as mensioned above, Maxtor _still_ have their 1yr warranty, I had too many maxtors die & seen many others die.
Never seen Seagate's die - again, not saying they don't, but they seem to be very reliable to me.

My preference would be in this order, best at the top.

    Samsung SpinPoint P80 160GB IDE ATA/133 8MB cache 7200RPM

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 160GB IDE ATA/100 8MB cache 7200RPM

    Western Digital Caviar 160GB IDE ATA/100 8MB cache 7200RPM

    Maxtor DiamondMax 10 160GB IDE ATA/133 8MB cache 7200RPM

I own the top three there, except my Barracuda is a 200GB drive,I havent bought a maxtor in a long time due to bad expierances with them, i would have to be really desperate for a hdd to buy one of them.

    Just go Western Digi

I'll tell you why. I have an old 7gb Western DIgital Hard Drive. Its about 6 or 7 years old. Its still running perfectly. It never clicks. And it once fell of my desk onto a wooden floor and a second time it slipped out of my hand and onto the floor (3foot drop at least).

Now that is one well built hard drive

Just as a matter of interest, what do you do with all that space - video editing or some such?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 583 ✭✭✭stuey

i have one drive (160) dedicated to music. there is only 27 gig free on that drive. 41,00 songs. Then i have a video hard drive(another 160 gig) thats full with movoies and other stuff. I have another hard drive (60 gig) which is a back up of everything i really need. I have a 40 gig game hard drive. I have another 80 gig which i use a system drive. Then a 120 gig for all my software and virtual machines(i use them a lot) and virtual cds (which are great i have to say). then another 120 gig for everything else

740Gb? I remember the company I worked for having to get sign off from the CEO in the states to buy a similar sized drive about 4 years ago. Mind you, it was a £100,000 unix server :D

I suppose you don't have cases and cases of burned CDs clogging up the living-room like I have :)

Totally agree. Before when i filled a drive i would buy a few cds and burn the
films, now i just buy another hd. They are so cheap that burning isnt really
worth the hassle anymore. Have 11 hds at last count. Over a TB. The sooner
someone caps my connection the better as i cant afford any more hardware
    :D

11 drives. Do ya have them all connected at once or do ya swap them in and out

    Swap them in and out
Have 3 in atm and a dvd burner. Have one in my xbox so thats about 800gigs.
The rest are all smaller drives < 100 gigs.
Am building a cheap storage server for them, but dont have the time or money to finish it
    but i will !
Will have over a TB of crap in my room, maddness !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 583 ✭✭✭stuey

I used to swap mine around. But then I broke a hard drive. Hard drives were never designed to be moved around and unpluged and powered up constantly. I know now adays build quality is at its best but still get ur server up and running asap

Whats the difference between ATA 100 and ATA 133?

They use similar IDE cables so it is down to bus speed. Only newer motherboards will support ATA 133 but ATA133 HDs will work using ATA 100.

I bought 2 Maxtor 300GBS last week from Dabs and I am very happy so far. I used Norton Ghost to transfer my old HD on to one of them.
