Trying to fix the bro-in-laws HDD. All it is doing is making clicking noises. Have tried it in my machine as the second drive, it stops it from booting up. Anybody know where you can get the info off it, payroll program needed.

    Thanks

Perhaps it stops your machine from booting because they're both set as the Master Device. Check the jumber settings.

However, if it won't even spin up there's probably not a lot you can do yourself.

I've used a data recovery company before and, while it was expensive, the cost of not being able to recover the data would have been far greater than the charge to recover it.

By "payroll program needed", do you mean that it's only the software that's required? That's not so bad. Hope your brother-in-law has made backups of his data.

    As I read once
There are two types of computer users
    those who make regular backups
and those who haven't lost all their data yet

The clickin sound indicates a head crash, thats pretty serious no software will be able to fix that and the more you power it up the more damage you are doing to the physical disk.

Thanks for the prompt replies, lads.
The jumper was set up as slave, but the head crash sound serious. The payroll info is not the software but the year to date, and no he hasn't any backups!

Head crash is as serious as basically hitting the hard drive as a hmaeer. its f*cked. Data recovery can be very expensive. Most of the time its not worth it.

It cost about 170yoyos just to find out if they can fix it!!

    Last resort:
Try putting the drive in the freezer (in a polythene bag) for 1-2 hrs, take it out and try it in the machine. Head crash may be caused by an overheating component, the cold may give ya time to back up your drive before it dies again. Thats if it powers up at all. She's most probably fried though!

yep what MunkeyHed says, it might get u time to get as much data u can off it before the hard drive heats up, best of luck.

    hi all,

sorry for going off topic - but how do you set up a hard drive from another computer as a secondary drive in a pc?
this is because my pc seems to loop at startup and i can't go into safe mode - so i'd like to try and transfer my files before i try my ghost restore disc.

    thanks in advance

Khalim, look at ur hard drive, should be a diagram on it and set the jumpers on it for slave drive. It should work out
