You.ll find it hard to beat Dell , just resist their extended warranty and you can get yourself a good cheap pc that will suit your porposes perfectly.

Best thing to do so you don't get shafted big time is get one of those computer mags for beginers and try to learn a bit about pc's before you buy one.

Alternativly post links to computers that interest you and get the opinions of the freindly people on boards.ie.

any idea whether you want a desktop or a laptop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭mr_angry

Dell are pretty much the way to go for quick-and-easy desktops. The lower-spec models are fine, but they wont be easy to upgrade in the long-term, if you ever wanted to do that.

If you're looking for a laptop, I'd suggest PC World's "Advent" range. They're great value for money, and you have a support outlet to fall back on if you ever run into problems. Or you can always post here with them and listen to people telling you to upgrade your RAM etc! :)

Since you don't really want to do any serious gameing (at least modern games, Solitary will still work fine. :)), The you don't need many fancy high end (ie expensive) features. So some kinda "Here's a prebuilt PC for you" would suit you quite well.

Most of the people here are really into computers and hence all want fancy stuff, so most of the ttalk here would be technical, plus most of the people buying new PCs would be looking for gaming rigs and would want the very pbest and to knwo exactly what they are getting. So most of the talk is aimed at computer enthusuasts, so if you see somewhere "Don't get X, it's not great. Get Y it's the schitznitz!", then it's possible that they are talking about fancy stuff that you can probably ignore.

Posting links to PCs you've seen and would like advice on is a good idea, as ED-209 suggested.

    Candy,

Use your money wisely, you may not completely understand what your getting with both these PC's - hardware wise - but they are alot better value for the comparitive money spent with Dell.

Komplett Athlon 64 (Socket 754) - €875.39 (you will get an extra year outta this - more than a dell)
Note: if you get this do at least double the amount of RAM.

    Callisto - AMD® Athlon® 64 - €897.51 (you need to pick out a monitor.

i think the castillo from elara is a much better option than the one from komplett . i think the upgrade path on the castillo to the 9600XT would be a sound one also. you could get half life 2 out of that machine if you suddenly took the urge

If my company was a lil bigger than it is I think I'd be annoyed at the use of that name.

Ok I lie. I am annoyed but nothing much I can do about it.

Anyhow surely there's cheaper options. You can get a full Sempron system for less than that. I'll leave it to others to post links cause I'd be biased.

From her initial post she doesn't want a big flashy system so athlon 64 is really way over the top. The A64 ones are better but there must be less expensive options. In fact I'd be lying if I said I didn't know of less expensive ones!

Best answer you will ever get. Ive been shafted because i didnt know what was what and now i have an idea.Take Ed's advice its sound.

Just the basics is all ya need and come back to us with a spec and we can tell ya either way.

    I'm thinking ibook

Won't run any games, underpowered, but very, very girly. Perfect for shopping with. The 12" is small and light enough to carry around like a purse, you'll love it.

Do the Komplett system come installed and include the XP media. If not you are talking another €100 + just for XP and then whatever other software you need will be extra.

for 733 .. comes with 19inch crt ... xp home ... and grab yourself a copy of .. er open office ? ... instead of office ... should be compatible .. :)
just the 19inch crt is a ***** to move around ...

to be honest dell would be handier if you're completely new to pcs and thats pretty much what they are there for .. as the others said ...

As has been said, the Dell route is probably the simplest. When you click customise and buy, uncheck the extras like extended warrenty and anything else you don't need. Also have a look around the site fro offers like free double memory or big hard disk or free printer/scanner. Dell always have offers like this somewhere.

Having said that I hate Dell and hate recommending them so I'll say have a look at Marx Computers. They do a Semperon for as little as €355 (In special offers section) which will probably do everything you want and is easily upgradable for games in the future should you want to.

Personally I don't find that a great offer. Spec is rubbish.

I agree, IMO this is a much better deal. €547 all in , The celeron system with the same spec is even cheaper. Anyone in the market for a cheap decent general purpose system will find it hard to beat those prices.

By the sounds of the OP's request, anything above a P3 with onboard graphics would be a waste.
Just get a decent monitor and any old second-hand piece of crap for <>€100 will suffice.
If anyone recommending a PC at more than 500 euros, can they explain why, given the modest requirements of the poster?

I assumed the OP was looking for a new PC. As I said in my post the celeron would come in a bit cheaper but The p4 is well worth the extra €60 IMO.
