but for such brazen electioneering... ahhh go on so!

as for the card? I have one, I love it, but won't be upgrading til I get myself a PCIe mainboard...

radeon 9800 pro card is 205yoyos but i might go high as 300 euros for a card and thats it

resolution i am looking is between 1024 by 768 and 1280 by 1024 with fps about 90 or better 120

I saw a 6800 128meg in overclockers.co.uk cheap i think, dont know how much the 128meg would affect preformance though. Otherwise get an x800 in the usa and get someone to ship it in with less value so u dont pay import tax

9800 pro is as good a card as you can get at the moment without paying an early adoptor premium for half proven and half developed technology. Most of the "better" cards have technologies that are not implemented in any available games, technologies that may never be implemented at that.
There is a big step up comming in terms of mobo and processors, the cards to fit in with that step will come in time.

If you are going to go beyond the 9800 Pro, figure out what specific games you want to play and make sure that the card will support those games (by checking game forums, not marketing hype or toms hadware), a lot of people are getting very fed up of newer cards performing worse than a 9600 on games like HL2 and even Farcry.

fenris, maybe some links those gaming forums might be good.

I am sure you have to sort the good advice from the bs there too though! Buying a 9800Pro at current prices would seem to be paying a 'too late' adopter premium, as in the price will fall soon as the card is being superceded.

Look a bit closer at cards specs. A 6600GT is using the same Direct X 9.0 technologies as the 9800Pro (except for Smart Shader 3.0 replacing Smart Shader 2.0, which is, I give you that, marketing to some degree), both have 8 pixel pipelines and 3 vertex shaders. However eventhough the 9800Pro is running a 256-bit memory interface compared to the 6600GT 128bit, you can't argue with the clocking speeds of the repective GPUs and GDDR as in 380/680 vs 500/1000 (GDDR3). No amount of overclocking is going to match that gap!

How much more expensive is this 6600gt yoke?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭davmigil

    Much the same price:

    e.g Komplett: XFX 6600GT (500/1000) 128Mb AGP €218
    Sapphire 9800Pro 128Mb €202

So either buy 6600GT now, wait for price of 9800Pro to drop (soon I expect) or wait a little longer and everything cheaper...Massive depreciation is a drawback with this PC hobby stuff!

PCI-express will soon be the way to go (or forced to go). So wouldn't invest too much on an AGP card now (and definitely not if you can afford more). I'm on a tight budget, so going AGP. At moment have settled on 6600GT, but will keep an open mind until purchase time. More options for PCI-express folks to look at, like X700 etc.

But wait any longer for the 9800pro and itll be outta date so def the 6600gt

+it can be flashed with decent cooling to ULTRA
    Mmm...ULTRA :D

I though only the 6800's came in an ULTRA variety? And flashign the bios can make your card very unstable.

Thats because they arent directx 9 based cards, so a good few new graphical features are not supported on these cards so obviously they will preform on some games better but a lot less detail, new cards support these new graphical features, which is one of the main reasons for playing new games. 6600 souinds like the way to go for budget cardm 9800 is good, but getting outdated fast.

    how about this one?

    VGA Charts....
    http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/index.html

note that the radeon 9800 pro works much better in ut2004 then the GeForce 6800 128MB

Looks good, the 6800 are beasts, can be overclocked good too with the right cooling, bit pricey from komplett, i would advise buying in america, i got my card really cheap over there, once u have the right guy shipping it in for u. I bought 250 dollars worth of stuff this week, he wrote a value of 60 dollars on it, no import tax on that, didnt pay import on my x800pro either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,174 ✭✭✭[CALIBUR]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,630 ✭✭✭gline

Nah I use an international shipper, they specialise in shipping stff from shops that wont deliver outside the US, basically he buys the stuff and pays shipping and import and i pay him before he buys it. people like that also get cheaper shipping because they have an account with the likes of UPS or FEDEX, because they do a lot of business with them, Great for ebay too as a lot of people wont ship outside USA

Mind giving me the url for the internationa shipper?

Hi, I'm looking to build my own, but have lost touch with the market & I'm looking for some info please. Is pci-e out for XP64 yet? I was thinking of going SATA, pci-e, XP64 system. Nothing crazy.....hoping to build barebones for around €600. Is this posible? What can I get for that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭davmigil

    Try this thread:

    €800:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=202568

    €500
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=202654

Head to www.komplett.ie and try their PC builder link for a rough estimate.

Post the spec you come up with!

    All the best,

    Dave

ps Probably better to post this as a new thread though, as it doesn't really have much to do with this threads topic ;)

u talkin about the new xp64 pre release for AMD chips or XP64 for itaniums??? the x64 (amd) edition is only at pre-release stage so no point in building a system on that and xp64 for itaniums , i dont think there is a mobo for itaniums with pci-e, though i dont know much about them so i dont really know

with regards to the original poster if you are buying a card around the price of a 9800pro dont' buy the XFX 128mb 6600GT instead. the price difference is little and everone is recommending the 6600GT over the 9800 pro.
