Just posting this to put an end to the "OMG ATI ownz nV, 2x the fpss in HL2" posts here by a certain newb:

Bottom line: 6800GT outperforms X800Pro across the board, ATI flagship (X800XTPE) comes out marginaly faster than 6800GT and 6800Ultra on some of the benches.
The new, mid range, Geforce 6600 does remarkedly well also.

    Hi Matt,

I just bought a Gainward 6800GT, so I would love to come to this conclusion. Unfortunately, benchmarking will largely depend on the scene/timedemo used to generate FPS.

On the very next page, you can see an alternate timedemo had the ATI Radeon X800XT-PE scoring highest (and more significantly so) across the board: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjkyLDM=

Ultimately, if the FPS differences are 108fps versus 104fps / 114fps versus 111fps, the performance becomes purely a statistic. Such differences will never be detected by the eye - so anyone with either of this high end GPUs should be a very happy camper with the Source engine.

My understanding is that the Nvidia cards aren't doing as much rendering work as the ATI cards under the source engine. Therefore I don't think it's possible to get accurate comparissons because it's apples and oranges here. Pity though.

I currently own ATI, but I have owned only NVidia in the past, so I'm not a fanboy of either. I go where the bang for buck is :)
