    DIGITAL CAMERA - HELP!!!!!

Im Looking to get a digital camera that is small enough to carry around in my pocket on a night out in town in pubs/clubs/housepartys and when just out and about in general. Im not looking to win any awards for my photograph taking - its more to document drunken nites out.

Im looking for something that is at the most 400 Euros and includes all the bits and bobs.
    - 4Mega Pix
    - Carry case (preferably one that is specific to the particular camera)
    - 256mb card
    - USB 2 wire
    - Pic software etc

I dont want to have to go buying bits for it after my initial purchase.

I have been drawn to the Canon Ixus I (see enclosed pic)and have come across what appears to be a good deal (see enclosed link).

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/53085/art/canon/ixus-i-white.html

Does anyone have a Canon Ixus I ?
What do you think of it ?

If somone has come across a better camera for a similar price I would love to hear about it and where I can get it.

I am not interested in buying of a Boards User so please dont try and flog me a canera you may have.

    Thanks Guys

Any camera you buy with 4mp is gonna get you a decent pic, I have the Olympus d350z which was 3.2 or 3.5 mpx and was great.

Canon do make great camera so you cant really go wrong.

hope to see you posting some pics on the challenges to come.
maybe try this also Fujifilm FinePix S3500 Zoom not sure on price though

    cheers D

ixus is a really decent camera...

Pentax have a model called optio (i think thats it) that's quite compact. Sony do a small camera with a fairly handy internal periscope style zoom lens so no pokey out bits.

    I'd buy the canon though.

There are some very small cameras on the market. Eg the Pentax Optio S series, Minolta X series. Casio also do some very small cameras which are almost identical in appearance to the Pentax ones. All of these small cameras seem to have slightly poorer picture quality than "large" compact cameras due to compromises in lens design. But pic quality will still be more than acceptable if you go for at least 3 mp.

    Thanks Guys

Was told that the Canon Ixus has a digital zoom as opposed to an optical zoom - do any off you have this on your cameras and does it make much of a difference to the quality of the photo taken

some ixus models don't have an optical zoom.

digital zoom means nothing, all it does is crop your image, optical zoom makes the original image appear closer. don't count digital zoom at all when buying a camera

    go to: http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital/
to learn about features on canons digital compact cameras

The Ixus I has a digital zoom only. Which for practical purposes means it doesn't have a zoom. Looks nice but it's missing a few things (like an optical zoom) that would be useful.

You'll get a nice Pentax Optio 5i from Amazon or elsewhere for your budget. Or the just-released Canon Ixus 40. Or even the Fuji Finepix 440 or 450 and you'll have a few quid left over.

I have a Pentax Optio, and would definitely recommend it. Small, good quality camera, and it has an optical zoom.
If you bought the current model on Amazon UK this is what you'd pay:

    Pentax Optio S40 Digital Camera (4mp 3x Optical) - £149.99
    Bytestor Hi-Speed SD Card 256MB - £21.99 OR
    Bytestor Hi-Speed SD Card 512MB - £34.99
Pentax Luxury Kit For Optio S - £23.27
    Total with 256MB (inc VAT and P&p) - £213.11 = €304.69
    Total with 512MB (inc VAT and P&p) - £226.50 = €323.89

Cheers Fjon does the Pentax have video recording with sound capabilities
and if so does it depend on the size of the SD/MMC card how long you can record footage for.

Does it photograph well in the dark ?

    Its cheaper on www.pixmania.com

    So it is!

It does have video-capability, and with sound, but unfortunately it does not depend on the memory card. It can take only up to 60seconds at a time. The stupid thing is that you can immediately take another 60 seconds afterwards.
I have rarely needed to use over 60 seconds though.
One thing to note is that you said that you wanted to use the camera for capturing nights out. The camera is fine for this, but the video's won't look great as most of it will be taken in the dark. I have taken some footage in pubs and parties and it does end up being quite dark. However I would say this is the same with any video, unless they have night-mode or a light (which I don't think you're going to get in a camera that size).

This website is still available and I know at least 3 people who recently bought cameras from here at great prices compared to the prices here. They had absolutely no problem in getting their cameras.

You only need a 2mp camera for 6x4'. Don't just cameras by their mp as some cheap 4 and 6 mp camera are dire.

Check out the DSC-U20/30 or 40. Great quality for the size.

I like the Nikon 3700 at the moment. I'm looking for a good price on it. Slightly bigger than the DSC-U20/30/40 but a lot more fully featured. Looks like it has fantastic IQ too.

technically true but if you later decide you want to selectively crop a picture you can't

i was almost about to deal with ny-cam but questioning them about their last compnany closing, i got a very weird e-mail from the owner Dr Weinman telling me it's probably unlikely that this new business will go bankrupt again.

i don't like probably, when i'm spending thousands of euros. in the end i bought from http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ a truely professional company in all aspects
