Ireland has two gay rugby clubs now - the Emerald Warriors, established since 2003 and the Ulster Titans.

I say fair play to the lads...

Not to start a row here but why is there gay rugby clubs? Surely its bad for sports that there is a sort of ''segregation'' between straight and gays?

i knows what ya mean. Surely the lads on the gay team must feel different cos they have to join a "special " club. I presume there is gay people on "normal" teams that just dont tell their team mates.

Or even gay lads on a "normal" team who do tell their team mates. Not sure it would make any difference really.

Lol - lads, gay guys and guys on the gay team don't have to join a special club. I know several guys who have played on 'gay' teams over the years and would chase a girl around a bar just like you or me. It's a social ethos thing, not a segregation thing and these teams are as far as I know always welcoming of any sexual orientation. It's not really any different than a group of guys from the same job or the same pub deciding to form a team. And then having an inter-firms or a pub league.

In fact, this is the equivalent of referring to the NZ Maori as a segregated team

I believe most of the guys that play rugby are gay anyway or at least it attracts a much higher % of gay men than most other sports. Guess its still a kind of taboo

I think a few straight lads also play for them and in all probability some gay lads I'm sure play for other clubs. They also get a lot of new players playing through the gay community that probably wouldn't play otherwise.

I reffed them a year back. I put my foot in it when I told them to "straighten up" at a lineout. Thankfully no-one noticed.

What an absolute load of cobblers!

I think it's a good thing that there are gay rugby teams thriving - straight guys are welcome to join them of course and as a poster said, it attracts guys from the gay community who mightn't othrwise have played rugby. Encouraging as many people to play rugby is surely a good thing. It's not about segregation, but creating a gay friendly space and environment for gay guys to play rugby in.

I think is says a lot about rugby and the maturity of its advocates, players and supporters that not one poster on this thread has come out with homophobic crap.:)

Imagine if this was about a gay soccer team - the reaction I suspect would be a bit different.:(

The warriors are not a gay team they are Irelands first gay friendly team. There are players playing in most clubs who are gay but aren't open about it as they fear rejection, although given the experiences I have had in the last year being involved with the warriors that is probably an unfounded fear in 90% of cases. I am not gay and play for the warriors and players of all orientations are more than welcome especially if there are any second rows knocking around out there lol. Most of the players in our current squad have only taken up playing in the last two years as they never felt comfortable in school or after in joining a club until the warriors were formed so yes there is a need for it, not for segregation but for integration. The warriors are first and foremost a rugby team!

Stephen, would I be right in saying they were established in order to take part in the gay world cup that was held in DCU last year?

I've played a few times against the side, and there really has been a marked improvement, no offence intended but it was noticeable that it was a team made up of newcomers when we first played you...
That said it was the biggest turnout of supporters I've ever seen at a J4 pool match :)

No that was not the reason they formed at all infact they had played in Bingham cups twice prior to hosting it in DCU last year. That is how the club ended up entering the J4 league though as that was part of the deal with the Leinster Branch helping the club with hosting what turned out to be the biggest sporting event held in Ireland that year!

The team is steadily improving Last year was my first season playing with them and I can tell you by the end of the season most clubs could not believe that they had only took the game up two years ago. Will be interesting when we actually win a game this year as to how the clubs take getting beaten by a gay team but I'm fairly sure it will happen especially with the restructuring of the J4 league next season!

Without trying to take it too far off topic, how is the J4 league being restructured next year?

    *J4 Metro League

    • In order to avoid some of the serious mismatches that have occurred at this level in recent seasons it has been decided to operate a merit-based J4 League using last season’s results as the starting point
    • A J5 League will be created to facilitate clubs entering a second J4 team as well as accommodating the weaker teams in the J4 League
    • Where teams opt for uncontested scrums in the J4 and J5 Leagues back row moves will not be allowed from uncontested scrums

I think they got a new coach last season who also works with the IRFU.
He's a rugby whizz. That's based on any presentations I've been at for reffing which he gives.

One of those punters with a very intelligent, insightful understanding of the sport.

Ha! I was in that lineout and I noticed. Let it go though because I thought it would be a bit "too gay" to make a crack about it. Plus I was too busy pretending to straighten up :)

Yet again a case of players not following referees orders. Rugby has a real discipline issue.

I dispute that, we take great pride in how straight our line outs are.

Well done to the lads in Emerald Warriors who beat Tallaght RFC by 19 points to 10 on Saturday last. They have really come on this season.

We were in Pantibar afterwards and the boys were looking good in their kit and they managed to collect a few bob.

So who says gay guys can't play good rugger?:D

    Go Warriors!!:)

They were prob started up as an ideal for the Gay Games/Gay rugby world cup and it is another way for people who might not be in the scene!
