its not really HL related more..computer dont worry

i have a XXgb drive of apps and stuff ive..got
an XXgb drive of installed games, XXgb of films and tv XXgb system and an XXgb partition of songs

my games drive is like..well full i currently have 22mb out of 60gb free :o, so ive got 1 of them new 300gb Maxtors coming, thing is, this will be becoming my 100gb space for xbox things (getting it chipped this weekend) and 200gb for games with the old partition going back into the apps 1

now steam is all set up in F but doing this move is going to , im not sure maybe something like J and im wondering, i dont want to lose my HL2 save file, can i just copy over all of steam into the new directory and will steam be ok with this or is it gonna try downloading the preload all over again

i know ill prob get a "wait and see" sort of reply to find out myself, i was just wondering tho if anyone else has moved there steam folder to another drive and got away with it?

argh crap low disk space pop ups now..hurry up drive!

    -edit-

i noticed this yesterday or the day before, i could of sworn i saw a sticky somewhere for backing up HL2 onto a dvd now i cant find it again..it was this forum wasnt it?

Make a Half-Life 2 backup DVD from Steam

And to answer your main question, dunno, never tried it. But its probably tied into the registry there somewhere. Try it and see :)

just use the same account, and it will auto download all you need.

If you want to make it quicker, exit steam, copy over the steamApps folder, and then restart steam. It'll just update whats needed then.

Just copy whole folder over and point the short-cut at it.

I moved it from C:Program Files/Stream/etc etc/ to D:Program Files/Steam/etc and all I had to do was re-enter my password.

So far no problems. You could always keep the original steam folder around for a while/copy it back if you have problems.

I thought with win2k/winxp you can choose the letter for your partitions. Can you just copy your entire f: to you new drive and then make that f: and let you current f: becom whatever's free ?

actually thats a good point it will be merged with whats currently G so unless that sneakly changes to F ill have F free to make a new partition...it may just work!

well all i can say is d'oh

i managed to burn a disc with the files on...but it seems i didnt put them all on so when i booted up steam again i only had 75% of the files....crap

and to make matters worse in the process of formatting the new hdd i managed to delete 60gb worth of stuff off 1 of my other drives..somehow... :D

steam always seems to update, even if you've got everything backup up properly, that doesn't take too long usually
