Having No Menstral Cycle

First off, I know this is not a subject most guys like to read about so sorry ;) I also would have gone unreg for this but just can be arsed.

I just read the thread on the menstral pain and thought I'd get a few opinions on the problem I am having.

I have a history of abnormal cycles, when I have a cycle every month it is never on the day it should be the folowing month, it just shows up when it feels like it.
Sometimes it doesnt show up at all.

For the last 3 months it hasnt shown up, I am on no medications and I dont think I am any stressed than usual. I thought I was getting my cycle last month but it was only 2 days of spotting.

I get all of the signs of pms but then nothing happens.

The last pap I had was about 5 years ago, I find them very uncomfortable and it came back normal last time after a year when I only had 3 menstral cycles.

Most women would say hey, your lucky...what I am worried about though is that something may be happening that will prevent me from having kids.

Has anyone else had this sort of history and come to find it is normal?

I do plan on seeing a doctor about it but not until after the first of the year...long waiting list.

*oh, and no it isnt possible that I am pregnant ;)

    Thanks!

Some women hardly get any "visits". In fact, a friend of mine had to actually go on medication to make her period come every month, because she wasn't having any at all.

Don't think anyone will be able to tell you what's wrong though. Why do you have to wait so long to see a doctor? Can't you just see your GP?

I've been to a gp about ten times about the same issue...and I've even tried different doctors. They all say that all women are different and it's totally normal for some of us to have mad cycles.

However, I did read that it may be a sign of ovarian cysts, which I will eventually get checked out, although I'm not worried.

Try not to worry, it is quite normal to be irregular. :) YOU FREAK

    thanks fellow Freak :)
I am glad to know I am not the only one then, will get a full work up soon enough. Guess I am lucky if it isnt a problem and I can still have kids in the future :D

I have also been to the GP with the same problem, like you I wanted to make sure it wasnt something that might prevent me from having kids in the future.
In the end I was told that all is well and its not unusual so that was good to know.

The most common reasons I'm told it can happen are being underweight or under stress. Also an overactive thyroid and polysistic ovarian syndrome could possibly cause it. If you are worried about it I would recommend going to a doctor to put your mind at ease.

They can carry out a few simple tests such as bloods to determine hormone imbalances and an ultrasound, which is what I had done. Going on the pill can regulate it also.

I'm lucky if I get 6in a year! two years ago I missed five in a row now that was scary! I too get pms but nothing happens. My ma asked the doctor about it coz was more worried than me and he asked if I "looked feminine" I still laugh about that... anyway he said that's normal andprob just the way I am

And just to amaze you: a guy's suggestion.

BEAT, it might be worth your while to get your iron levels checked. Anaemia can cause the effects you're describing.

Go on the pill (you need to take the pill on the first day of your period so.....)

You will have 7 days a month then to get your period.

Before you go on the pill, take a pregnancy test (you might swear you couldnt be, but stranger things have happened!).

    no period for 3 months?
Get yourself to a doc asap, a different doc if needs be. You need to be sorted out.

No ruthie, am not on the pill...I did hear it would regulate things though.

Sleepy, that is good advice actually, could explain why I am tired all the time too.

Mini-person, thatnks for the input but if a person doesnt have sex in over a year I doubt they could get pregnant ...
unless I am the next Mary :p hehehe

All in all I will get it checked on when I can,
    thanks!
    :)

The pitutory gland (in the brain) controls and influences the femalel overies and male testes.
Female cycle goverened by the anterior pituitary gland and overian hormones, eg oestrogens & progesterones. It is the Progestrone which plays the regulation/cycle tune.

    Affects on fertility.
Pitutory produces -FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) & (LH) luteinizing Hormone.
Action of FSH ripens graafin follicle (small vessles in ovary each containing an ovum (egg) outcome is production of oestrin. > causes hypertrophy (thickening) of uterus lining.

Action of LH develops Corpus Luteum (substance left on the ovary after discharge of egg) which produces progestrone > thickening breaks down (causes pain for some) and sheds >cycle.

Some people have OWN designated amount of progestrone & oestrogen. Just the way one is made. Nothing to do with fertility. Body weight has been found to be a factor re-pregnancy for SOME. eg under 7 stone then BODY won't let pregnancy happen FOR SOME.

1st line female test for fertility/ infertility is Blood test for FSH & LH & pituitary Xray plus 6 month diary of cycle.

Long term use of contraceptive pill can turn clock off > infertility > until drugs 'Clomid? or other type switches it back on.

    hi there,

to those who mentioned not having regular periods or indeed vanished periods - have you heard of polycystic ovary syndrome? Sounds worse than it is believe me - but a major symptom of this is the absent or irregular periods you're experiencing. You can find out more about it on this website www.pcosupport.org - they have a link there that you can do one of those mini questionnaires to 'check if you have pcos' - might be worth a try.

The pill is often the way women regulate periods, it has its merits but can sometimes only serve to mask an underlying problem that it is better to be aware of.

There is also a support group in ireland for information on PCOS.

    Hope this helps some,

    Louise :)

You say you have an irregular cycle which is not the same as
    amenorrhoea (none).
See previous reply amenorrhoea also associated with anorexia. Drastic weight drop, or serious underweight causes amanorrhoea.
If one had or was developing polycystic overies which result in producing a raised level of mixed hormones this would cause a mix of body changes.
    The most noticable include:
Might be some weight gain, raised/overactive thyroid function, breast milk due to raised prolactin, and hirsutisum from raised testostrone level (male hormone) which causes hair growth eg signs of beard on chin/face.
I suspect you are just irregular which is normal for you, like the majority of the population.

Would echo the advice about getting checked for PCOS, I have it.. and my symptoms are similar to yours. Either way it's worth getting checked.

As for taking the pill to regulate your cycle etc etc.. well, why do you want to regulate it? Periods are not actually necessary nor fully natural for a woman (yes, this is true, no matter what the majority/church/doctor may tell you). Ideally,in evolutionary terms, a woman should be either pregnant or lactating, so she would only have have a few periods in a lifetime. If you're happy with your cycle, and are just nervous because of what you "should" have, why mess around with hormones like the pill that you really don't need? Unless you actually want to go on the pill for other reasons, I wouldn't bother for this.

Incidentally, the 7 day gap in the pill was insisted upon by the Catholic church who felt it was unnatural for a woman to not have a period; it's not necessary, but most doctors don't even know that... *rolleyes*

    can u back this up?

Not enitrely accurate, but for SOME women it may be beneficial to have fewer cycles in the year. However having no cycle can lead to other problems such as bone mineral density loss etc...Again in some cases it is desireable to stop the cycle completely.

However in Chineese medicine Theory, a menstrual cycle is envied by men, as it is seen as a cleansing of the body and mind.
Incidentally, the 7 day gap in the pill was insisted upon by the Catholic church who felt it was unnatural for a woman to not have a period; it's not necessary, but most doctors don't even know that... *rolleyes*

Complete and utter bullsh*t, I am no fan of the Catholic Church, but that is such a load of cr*p. It is comments like that that frighten women away form learning more about their menstrual cycle and living in ignorance.

The 7 day gap is there for a reason. It is to allow the body to shed the endometrium, which has developed over the 21 days - as in the majority of women the endometrium continues to thicken. Without this break the woman can experience break through bleeding or spotting. As synthetic hormones can have dangerous side effects and long term effects it was also considered scientificaly prudent to limit exposure. However the newer brands of the Pill have somewhat lessened the risk.

The Pill may be cycled together in cases where clinically indicated (menhorragia, endometriosis etc.) or where the woman wants to avoid a period - such as exams holiday etc... in these cases it is only recommended to cycle the packs for 3 packs as beyond that the majority of women with have some breakthrough bleeding.

Many women receiving continuous treatment for endometriosis or menhorragia will cycle packs for as long as possible to avoid a cycle, however the endometrium will shed as breakthrough bleeding or spotting through time.

To truly avoid a menstrual cycle or to avoid haveing so many cycles, the Mirena IUS (Intra uterine system) is excellent, as is the newer Pills such as Seasonale (not sure if available here yet). the Mirena has the advantage of being an ideal contracetive, lasts 5 years, treats menhorragia and in the majority of cases stops the womans cycle.

    So rant and rave over....

Should anyone wish to have any issue clarified or would like futher information PM me or see my site.
