I'm thinking of an AMD system, maybe the Athlon64. I dont really know what to look for. Also, will I need to upgrade my power supply for a the new motherboard, my system is about 3-4 years old (Im guessing its about 250w)

    Thanks alot!

Im going to recommend a lot of stuff which i actaully own because i reckon experience beats a review to be honest...Obviously other peoples input helps me too...

My system is fault free and i have never had software or hardware problems.

The MSI board is really excellent. It is @ http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=300050&cks=PRL

The upgrade kit i bought it in is @ http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=118126&cks=PRL

I originally paid €450 for the upgrade kit 3 weeks ago...its €420 odd now. Its excellent and the heat sink and fan are really good...

In terms of a PSU the one i got is solid..its 520W which i massive but its got 3 fans, a gold plated heatsink (its always freezing cold) and a fan control on the back (which really does work)...i just whack it up full playing games and put it on auto or silent when i surfing or watching a movie...

My friend got the same spec as me at the same time except he doesnt have a fourth hard drive and he bought a 400W Fortron S-ATA special edition.
Fortron are apparently excellent but his system cant run at 100% for more than 10-15 minutes without shutting down. He knows for a fact (by process of elimination) that 400W is not powerful enough for his system. I calculated how much voltage i need for my system (using conservative figures) and it worked out at 440W...thats huge for any system and getting the wrong PSU at my level messes up the system.

AMD 64 bit are really really fast without a 64 bit OS. I have 64 bit Windows but i havent installed it yet so i dont know what a 64 bit windows machine is like.

If you do get the board i have then i really cant stress enough how savage S-ATA (Serial ATA) is.

I hope this big long spiel helps you.

    Hey Prior Of Taize,

Thats the very Mobo I was looking at! You reckon its a good choice?...
Im just a bit confused about the power supply, how to I know what I need for a new system? I was thinking of leaving my old psu in, and just getting a new mobo, hd, ram, etc.

    Thanks again.

yeah, that's a decent mobo alright. Nice and cheap upgrade there. You'll be needing a new psu to go with it though. Have a read through the MSI forums here to get an idea about psu requirements/ram compatability etc.

I built 2 a64 pcs around the MSI mobo (neo platnium). its the best mobo i have ever used. Im always going to buy that one when i consider building an a64 machine.

DONT WHATEVER YOU DO BUY EPOX. They are the worst mobos out there by far

Dont mean to derail the thread, but what makes you say that? I have an epox and have had no problems, BIOS is easy to configure, has lots of nice features.

I would seriously say buy the upgrade kit for €420...512Mb of the same ram that comes with that is like €89 a stick.

I bought the upgrade kit and an extra gig of ram and its all 100% fully compatible. That MSI board takes 2Gb of DDR400 and 3 Gb of DDR(anything less that 400). It has everything...

The top EPOX board on komplett is fairly expensive and to be honest all i saw extra was it had 6 S-ATA and 6 PCI slots when mine had 4 S-ATA and 5 PCI.

The K8N Neo Platinum board has onboard 7.1 and you can get a solid creative 7.1 system for somthine like €114.99

Its so easy to build a really savage system nowadays. I couldnt believe that i got everything in my signature and a MuVo 256Mb MP3 player and 50 blank dvd's and a keyboard and all sorts of added crap for €2003.49

ont mean to derail the thread, but what makes you say that?

My first epox motherboard lasted for about 8 months before it just started acting the boll*cks. Then i went abit and stuck with them ever since (for socket a).

When i was building my first a64 machine I said i'll give them another shot. I bought that expensive Epox one from komplett. It came and it didn't work. sent it back. new came it also didn't work. Tried to contact epox. They have no customer phone suport at all. This,me thinks, is because they get so many damn problems that they decided to work of e-mail only. I asked around on the boards a while ago and loads of people seemed to be having the same stupid problems with epox mobos. Even a friend of mine at komplett agreed with me that they are not that good at all
