I've bought myself a new heatsink and fan unit, only problem is the current heatsink is stuck with thermal glue to the chip. I've tried gentle nudging, but it's not moving. How do i get the glue off so I can pop on the new heatsink.

    tks

Try a less gentle nudging! I had to do this the other day, try gently twisting the chip, if it moves, keep twisting and it should come apart from the heatsink.

How bad is ripping the heatsink off with the cpu attached?

Because I've done that before :o

its bad but it happens. I presume you have a a64 with that big metal thingie (that i cant remember the name of) on top of the chip. Its perfectly normal for that to happen. However if you had a normal AMD Athlon (xp,duron, sempron) I would think its a bit weird.

I actually pulled out the heatsink, thinking the chip would stay in place in the socket - it didn't. I was convinced the chip was stuck to the heatsink until I started poking at it. They came apart relatively easily in the end, which was lucky as there was enough glue to hold the new chip in place.

Did that myself one, lucky not to bend the pins.

its a really dodgy thing to happen with a a64. cause there is so many god damn pins. and there so tiny. if one were to bend in the middle your f*cked. Or else u'd need a very steady hand
