Ok, a little advice needed here. Just installed Ubuntu on my old omnibook xe3-gc (650mhz, 192mb RAM, S3 Savage IX video card etc). As far as i can remeber I used to be able to get a resolution of up to 1024x768 in Win2k. However, the highest I can set it to in Ubuntu is 800x600.
    Any suggestions?

As Ubuntu is based on Debian unstable, you should be able to do

    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

to reconfigure the X Window system.

This is based on my experience with Debian - If Ubuntu have messed around with Debian's package management utilities, it might not work. It does seem to point to an issue with Ubuntu's hardware detection, though.

I'm thinking of giving it a try on my own laptop - if I get round to it, I'll post some details.

Starting to doubt whether I had that resolution or not before. :/
I think I may have not. Haven't used the laptop in a looong time. Anyway - otherwise I'm finding ubuntu quite nice. :)
Nice to make use of the laptop again with a light-weight (read:- not windows) OS.

Been using ubuntu since it was mentioned on this board a few weeks back, tis very nice alright, managed to get a whole load of things set up that I've had problems with before in other distros (wireless card, iPod, camera, usb disk etc)

I love just being able to apt-get new software. Hoary already has X.org in testing so if you've got a spare box you can give it a go. I'm completely converted to Gnome too, the last time I used it was 2.4 and it was pretty much all over the place, 2.8 is a huge improvement.

I don't mean to come across as a fanboy but Ubuntu is the best distro I've used in the last few years. Lets hope they keep up the momentum.

According to the manual, if you have the 12.1" screen it's SVGA 800x600 - anything larger is XGA 1024x768.
