freebsd 4.10 - 5.3 woes

    Hi,

I'm in the process of getting freeBSD up and running on me laptop for web server/database purposes. However, having probs with both versions:

4.10 release -> moused refuses to work with my mousepad..not a show stopper, but it would be handy to be able to fire up X without needing a second machine to demonstrate stuff

5.3 release -> This is the interesting one..It works perfectly (moused too!), but the second I plug in my network cable, the system dies, and nothing but a power down resusitates it. I have tried commenting out ifconfig_* from my rc.conf file and .. system works a treat.
I'm wondering, could it be an IRQ conflict or some such thats making it die? I havent been able to find anything about this on the mailing lists etc., so I'm totally stumped.

    Thanks,
    Lamps
