Master / Slave ?

i need a bit of advice on setting up my dvd drive , i took the cd-rw that came with the comp i bought of jammer and replaced it with the dvd rom drive from my old pc .

the cd-rw was set to slave and the dvd was set to master , now my question is do i need to set the dvd-rom drive to slave instead of master ?

the reason i ask is that it takes some time from putting a dvd disk in the drive and the drive reconising it as a dvd then playing the film or game.

    thank you.

    Matt.

I think its pretty common that the dvd drive takes a while to recognise the dvd you've inserted ...

at least it has been on all the systems I've used ... I don't think the slave master relationship will really affect the speed of recognising the drive

If there's a spare IDE channel for the DVD drive to be a master on (assuming you now only have two drives in that PC - the hdd and the DVD drive), it would be logical to use that. Or do you have other drives?

That depends on if there's something else on the same IDE cable or not. If there's 2 devices on it then one has to be set to master and one to slave, if the cd-rw was set to slave then that could indicate there is something else on the same cable set to master. If it's a hard-disk that's on the cable with it, check the hard-disk is set to master and the DVD to slave, if it's another cd/dvd/zip drive or something like that then it shouldn't really matter which is slave and which is master, if it's on it's own on the cable it shouldn't really matter if it's master or slave.

How long does it take from when you put in the dvd to it starting to play ? How much of that time is the time it takes you dvd software to load and read the disk (to check this boot the PC with the dvd already in, then after windows loads fully oped the dvd software manually) ?
