I want to move from my Monitor Audio Bronze speakers to a smaller type.
The small Bose white speakers would suit my new room, any recommendations on where to pick up four of these?
I want to keep my AMP and Base and wire these in.

My knowledge of Bose speakers is pretty limited, but as far as I know, the key to the Bose sound is the sub that is part of the pack. The little speakers on their own will sound poor without the sub, if indeed they will even work without it. Check it out first.

Also, this is totally my opinion only, but while Bose are definitley amonst the neatest speakers around, to my ear they are amonst the poorest also. They are gimmicky and overpriced. Your Monitor Audio Bronze are superior in my opinion.

Other speakers worth considering before you buy are:
Anthony Gallo - similar price to Bose, but way sexier and sound stunning too. These are as close to audiophile speakers as you'll get at the size.

Acoustic Energy aEgo - similar to Bose in operation, they are active, using the subwoofer to power the two little speakers. This may not suit your current set up, but I mention these speakers becaue they outperform any Bose I've heard. I use these on my computer setup

Monitor Audio Radius - not quite as small as either the Bose or the two mentioned above, but superb speakers for the price, and if you like your Bronze speakers you'll love these.

    Hope some of that helps.

    Robbie

    1x 120w Bronze Centre Speaker
    1x 120w 10" ASW100 Subwoofer

Hey Redman, How much are u looking for them? Any chance of a pic...I'm not very knowledgeable about these things? U say ur room is too small for them, are they big? Is this them: http://www.monitoraudio.com/products/bronze/index.htm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭redman

Yes Flinty thats them, except mine are Black.

I have a young child and I have metal stands for them which I can't use anymore in case they get knocked over. And the room isn't big enough to block them from her getting to them! Thus I need smaller ones that I can mount on the walls but will miss their great sound.

I paid about €1300 for the whole lot(five speakers and the base) in Richer Sounds Dublin about three years ago, I'd like €800.
I can arrange to take a picture and if you contact me directly I can show you them.

hey Redman, sorry for wasting your time...as I said I am not very knowledgable about this kind of stuff and had no idea they would be that expensive...must be good I guess!! Anyway, good luck with selling them, Dearg Doom and Zener seemed interested!

    Apologies again!

I have put the Monitors into a post in the Shop section.

Still interested in peoples opinions on a replacement set up for small neat but good speakers

Any onlines (irish?) sites to look at aside from www.richersounds.ie?

I have 5 Kef KHT 2005.2s and the accompanying subwoofer along with a Marantz SR5400. I've also used them with an SR6200, which gave a noticeably crisper sound but has very buggy software. I'll probably get the next 7000 series receiver they release.

The sound out of the Kefs is pretty excellent. You'll notice the difference in sound if you are coming from a full cabinet, but in size and price, the Kefs have the Bose stuff beaten. My dad has an accoustimass system that just sounds plain boring in any test in comparison. Bose basically justify their price tag by making speakers which are loud for their size and have fancily-monikered technology which for the most part is not useful enough (although occasionally very impressive :) ).

Thanks, did you buy the KEF locally?

No, got them from mediacheckpoint.de, who despite being a slight pain to order from (they don't accept CC, you have to pay the delivery man in cash) are very helpful and very good value.

To the best of my knowledge, the only place you can get them on this island is Belfast. Richersounds can probably get them in, but you'd be waiting months. I paid €800 including vat + delivery for mine.

If you *really* want to audtition them, I could probably oblige.

I have a Sony VA333ES amp. How would these speakers go with that? I am currently using the Sony Pascal speakers. They are cute and don't sound that bad but I am considering an upgrade.

I would imagine from looking at the spec of that amp online, very well.

You would be welcome to bring the amp over and try em out

Redman, Hiya John Mc From Richer Sounds here - sorry about the old www.richersounds.ie site its getting a bit creaky and will be replaced just after Xmas with a whizzy new one (with More current prices!) the Radius speakers really are A1, beautiful and not cheap! They are real MA quality though - the Radius 45 are tiny they fit into the plam of your hand but weigh a ton - then there is the Radius 90 which is a small 2 way there is also a matching centre - we have them online - but the pictures dont do them justice - they are available in Lacquer white, Lacquer black, silver, beech or rosewood - there is also a matching sub and centre - give the Belfast guys a bell (01)671 9666 - you will be redirected - we are radically cheaper here on Monitor Audio than the UK The Radius 45's are £60 each (about €87) the Radius 90's are £75 each (about €110) the sub is £199 (about €300) and the centre is £150 (about €220) have a look on www.monitoraudio.co.uk for full details - we will deliver anything to Dublin for €10 if you mention you are a Boards.ie member - once again sorry 'bout the .ie prices - they are out of date but will be up dated soon!

Thanks JohnMC would you take a trade in of my monitor audio speakers?
I still have original receipt to show I purchased them from Richer Sounds.

I can call up to Belfast.

I have the same speaker setup as ssh (KEF KHTs, 5 eggs + sub) and can't recommend them highly enough. Such design purity ;) such punch for the size :D

I was at the time contemplating Bose Acoustimass (where have we heard this story before? ) but was lucky enough to have a specialist shop nearby (in Sheffield, UK) that had both setups up & running for comparison - it took me less than 5 mins to decide which to go for. If you do a bit of digging, you'll find out that "after they were (made) famous" by What Hi-Fi, the KHTs have won over a lot of the actual-Bose/nearly-Bose crowd, if you get my drift...

You've still got the problem of sourcing them over here, though :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭redman

Thanks Ambro, do you know if you can get different covers for them.

I am looking for white speakers (believe it or not) to blend in with the walls

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,994 ✭✭✭ambro25

Only come in silver with black grill, or just all-black... they're aluminium-made, just so you know, egg-shaped (as in 'totally' egg-shaped, not for gimmicks or design but for the acoustics to work the way they do).

The sub is, likewise, either silver or black, with smoked-black glass top in both versions.

That's so far as I know - they may have extended the range since, mind...

ssh (as I understand it) & mine's there:
    KEF KHT 2005 setup

Ended up buying them from Richersounds Sheffield last year (so they're not .2s like ssh, btw - my mistake), they were a whole £200 cheaper than the shop in which I'd listened to them against the Bose stuff...

Well thanks for everyones advice on the thread

Following Robbie1876's intial reference I ended up choosing the Monitor Audio Radius with a Marantz SR5500

They are fantastic, although I am yet to wall mount.

Purchased from Richer Sounds in Belfast, so my thanks to JohnMC and Alan for a great deal and a good service.

    :D
