i think i might buy the following soon:
a 3200+, msi neo plat 2 and 1 stick of crucial ballistix pc3200 512 mb from komplett. i already have a 9800 pro

do you think i would get less than 30 fps in hl2 in very intensive scenes with 1 stick of ram or do u think i should buy a gig?
if anybody has css and has similar specs to what i want, what is the lowest it will go to in very large firefights?

I have a very similar setup to yours. 3200+, 512, 9800pro (oc'd and with arctic cooler).

I fully expect to be able to play HL2 nicely, but from what I understand, the extra ram will definitely help. If you have the money, then why not? :)

Check out the half-life forum (games->half life). There are a few threads on specs there with links to stress tests run by (for example) tomshardware.

the stress test is mostly gpu dependant. with my 1800+ and 512 ram i get 70fps but in firefights or in some levels it lags like hell. all i want is to do is run this game smoothly, no other game matters to me and if i can do with 512 that means i save some money. if the game is run in dx7 mode it will run perfectly smooth even on a geforce 2mx, so this must take the strain off the cpu or something.

i realy think it would be worth paying for the extra 512mb
while it does fun fairly good with 512mb it can be a little jumpy and loading times are way fater with 1gb

    Yup, go for the gig.
512 isn't an awful lot when you consider how much the OS and the million tiny apps are taking.
I've got 768MB and it still swaps/loads in places while playing cs:source.

512mb is enough for most games out at the moment, but 1 gig would definately be recommended for the future. If you can afford it, go for it!

I would also recommend 1Gig of ram. But most games you will get away with fine with 512mb. But thats only going last in the very short term. More and more games will need the 1Gig or ram.

Yep, go for the GIG, makes a huge difference to load times etc, and will ONLY help for you to enjoy the HL2 experience even more!
